The South Perth Yacht Club was recently abuzz with the spirit of friendly competition and camaraderie as it hosted the traditional Sherwell Family Trophy Time Trial, a much-anticipated annual event held closest to Mother’s Day.

Diane Ward, representing her late father Avon, her mother Beryl, and son Jason, had the honour of awarding the Sherwell Family Trophy. This event carries a rich legacy and is a cherished part of the Club’s annual calendar, a tradition that allows us to honour our past while celebrating the present.

Trailer Trash, skippered by Paul Stott and navigated by Peter Black, emerged victorious in the handicap event, with the pair showcasing their yachting prowess and strategic acumen throughout the competition. Their victory was well-deserved, and they stand as an inspiration for both seasoned skippers and newcomers to our Club.

The “Least Points” pennant was claimed by Thanet, steered by PC Guy Skinner, with Richard Evans back onboard as the navigator. Demonstrating impressive precision, Thanet scored a mere 6 points lost over the 11 checked marks. Their success included the tricky transit at Foam-Concrete, a challenge that often catches the unsuspecting.

The event’s results were as follows:

Port Fleet Results:

Trailer Trash – Paul Stott & Peter Black (9 pts)

Magnifique Too – Anton Jennings & Sebastian Jennings (11 pts)

Thanet – PC Guy Skinner & Richard Evans (13 pts)

Starboard Fleet Results:

The Pickled Pickle – Mark Hayman & Jared Tickle (15 pts)

The Dolphin – Jason Claricoates & Caroline James (17 pts)

M&Ms (Waylen Bay) – PC Michael and Maria Cook (21 pts)

The Wooden Spoon award, a testament to the spirit of participation, was awarded to Angel, navigated by Anthony Julian and Harvey Singh, who accrued 1166 points.

The Sherwell Family Trophy Time Trial was not just about competition. It was also an opportunity for old friends to reconnect, share their experiences, and reminisce about past regattas in the warmth of the Yachtsman’s Bar. It was equally thrilling to see new members, drawn by the excitement of the competition, immerse themselves in the vibrant yachting community of the South Perth Yacht Club.

Congratulations to all the winners, participants, and members who came together to make this event a remarkable success. We look forward to seeing everyone back on the water soon for the next chapter in our club’s rich power boating history.
