The Tally Hobbs Memorial Regatta 2022

Sailed at South of Perth Yacht Club.

The Sunday Session on the 25th of September 2022

It was only thought really. I was asked to help out on Sunday as they were short someone on the support boat. So the boat camera went into a pocket and away we went.

The first couple of hours were dreadful as the boats weren’t going anywhere, even when there was enough pressure to get out onto the river. But smart work by the RO Les Swinton had the boats back on the beach for lunch as the first whisper of a westerly began to tickle the river.

An early lunch and out we went for a start, half an hour in front of the advertised time. No problems and the racing got under way with about 21 boats roaring off the line.  It was a great day to sail and plenty of breeze that began to exhibit the classic sou wester pattern as it rotated into the south over the afternoon. The hard working Doug had the top mark under control with John and Wendy taking care of business for everything else. Well done to all of them.

Apart from a start in the second race that had us gasping as the fleet was well over the line, but enough people came back to keep the RO happy and it was the only race that Nick and Brad managed to get an OCS on. Otherwise the rest of the afternoon was theirs.

Then of course the other side of the story. Our visitors from Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht club came prepared with big grins and speed on their side. A tow down the river had them down in time and even the early lunch didn’t faze them as they hopped into steak sandwiches prepared by the club. They must be rich! They also did very well in the racing and filled out 3 places in the first six. Well sailed.

Welcome also to the visitors from Esperance Ash Reichstein and Tim Buckman. Apparently they were having their boat smartened up by local people and they decided to join the regatta over the weekend. Sailed well enough too, taking a good mid fleet result.

The results were provisional when I looked at them, but from what I can see Nick Jerwood and Brad Sheridan for the win, Grant Alderson/ Luke Patterson second and Greg Tonnison/ Nick Robinson  third.

Well sailed all and many thanks to all who participated.
