What a fabulous weekend our Cruising Section enjoyed at Bremer Bay last weekend 25 – 27 March.

15 of us arrived on Friday at Bremer Bay. Some drove, others flew while others came down in their motor home and caravans. There was an assortment of accommodation ranging from the Bremer Bay Resort, air bnb house, chalets in the lovely caravan park or people’s own caravans and motor homes.

Pre-dinner drinks were held at “HQ” being the lovely air bnb where some stayed. This was followed by a great dinner at the “Bremer Bay Brewing Company”.

It was an early start on Saturday morning with us meeting at 7.30am down at the Bremer Bay Boat Harbour for our charter boat cruise on the “Alison Maree” out to the unique Bremer Bay Canyon approximately 70 kilometres out to sea.  For the next 6 hours, we saw 3 different family pods of Orcas and revelled in watching and learning about the different behaviours they were exhibiting.

From watching them work together to chase and catch fish, seeing a creche of baby orcas, to being thrilled as they came so close to our boat that we felt we could reach out and touch them before going under the boat. Their behaviour was explained by an onboard marine biologist who gave us a great insight into the orca family pods and behaviours.

The crew were wonderful in making us feel very welcome and providing us with morning and afternoon tea as well as lunch.

“Captain Mike Irving presented SoPYC Cruising burgees to skipper ‘Dundee’  and first mate Karina and beers and ciders to the amazing crew. Karina is a member of Princess Royal Yacht Club and fondly remembered her junior years sailing Pelis in SoPYC regattas”

Chart plotter shows our track as we make our way back to port. 3000 meters!

We arrived back at the boat harbour and with huge smiles on our faces we said our fond farewells and thanks to the skipper and staff.

We all met later at “HQ” for drinkies and pizzas and to relive our wonderful memories of such a fantastic day.

On Sunday morning we all met at the “Wellstead Museum Café & Restaurant” for a hearty country breakfast before saying our goodbyes and going out separate ways, some returning to Perth and others going to do more exploring of the Southern Region.

Definitely a weekend that will live long in our memories!
