Busy Weekend at SoPYC

Winter is certainly here in June, and the weather typically varied. There are however some really good signs in relation to the numbers of people participating.  I’m sure a lot of people stayed away expecting very little to no wind.  For racing that was possibly a good idea.  For the training, it was a chance to go over some theory, boat setups, land-based training, and even some knot tieing.

There were 126 sailors down for the day which included: 24 sailors entered into the Winter series and an additional 92 sailors doing all sorts of training:

  • 36 29er and Laser WA Sailing Squad members participating in a WAIS /WASS camp
  • 15 Sailors in our Women’s Keelboat Program
  • 6 Sailors in  Keelboat Beginner and Level 2 courses
  • 27 Junior Sailors doing regular winter training
  • 8 Kite Foilers Racing in the Afternoon
  • Plus 17 boats entered the SoPYC Winter series event.

The only thing missing was the wind, which did come in both days with a late June Seabreeze around 3:00pm.  Seems to be taking about an hour from seeing the signs at Ocean Reef until it starts on the river these days.

Kite Foil Racing

The Kite Foiling sailors managed to squeeze in a late series of 5 races on Sunday afternoon, run informally by WAIS coach Matt Jerwood and supported by SoPYC.

1st place  Alex Landwehr – SoPYC

2nd  – Alty Frisby

3rd – Hector Paturau

True Sports

As part of our education to the young sailors, we want them to be not only great sailors but also good citizens.  One of the programs we are involved in is the True Sports Values which are equally applicable to all sports.  It has been suggested that these values also could be reviewed by all of our members.

I’ve included an overview below and each week we will be promoting one of the values and remind everyone why we are all coming together in this great sport of ours.  Some of the key messages include:

  • Always strive for excellence and rise to the challenge, but never at the expense of others. Discover how good you can be.
  • Play honestly and obey the rules, in letter and spirit. Winning is only meaningful when competition is fair.
  • Show respect for everyone involved in creating a sporting experience, both on the water and off. Win with dignity and lose with grace.
  • Find the joy of sport and have a good time. Keep a positive attitude and look to make a positive difference, on the water and in your community.
  • Place physical and mental health above all other considerations and avoid unsafe activities. Respect your body and keep in shape.
  • Share sport with others, regardless of creed, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or ability. Invite everyone into sport to make it more meaningful for the whole community.
  • Always remember the community that supports your sport and helps make it possible. Find ways to show your appreciation and help others get the most out of sport.
