A fabulous day to end the 2022 season – the weather was kind and twenty boats turned up for the final time trial of the season, converted from a social fun event to a consistency event to make up for one of the days lost to inclement weather earlier in the season.

It was also the day on which Captain Dave retired from his position, handing over to Glenn Swift. It was a memorable day for Dave, who ended his tenure with a handicap win to take home the Capital Cup – the company of which he is General Manager.  So thank you Dave Markham, for your management of the Power Yacht Section over two very difficult years, with Covid being a major challenge.

Thanks also to outgoing Starter John Meldrum, who has worked diligently every weekend during the season to ensure time trials were run efficiently and results were produced on time. John hands over the Starter’s duties to Margaret Cooper, who has been working hard behind the scene for some time now to ensure a smooth handover. Unexpected staff changes have added an extra layer of complexity.

A boisterous Melbourne mob, friends of Justin and Helen Taylor from the Royal Victorian Motor Yacht Club in Williamstown came to visit and see how we do time trials in WA, which turned out to be quite different from the way in which events are run in Melbourne. Perhaps we can both take some of the best parts of the other’s methods!

A healthy (and noisy) crowd watched the Cats demolish the Swans during the afternoon on large screen TV’s strategically placed in the Member’s Bar and the Al Fresco area. It finished a superb, enjoyable day!

All eyes will now be on the Presentation Night on Saturday 8th October.  Don’t forget to book early to give our hard working F&B staff the opportunity to prepare. Who will wear the coveted 400 and 401 numbers in 2023?

Finally, the CPYA Prize night, which was scuttled by Queen Elizabeth’s funeral observation day, has been rescheduled for midday on Sunday 23rd October at RPYC.  It will take the form of a lunchtime BBQ in the Catalina Bar. Bookings through RPYC.
