South of Perth Yacht Club’s Power Section welcomed its 2023 season with a glamorous and time-honoured tradition, hosting the Pre-Season Cocktail Party at the beachside marquee.

The event, held two weeks prior to Opening Day, showcased a pleasant evening breeze, live musical performances, and an exquisite grazing table offering a variety of platter food to satisfy all tastes.

This annual cocktail party serves as a platform to acknowledge and express gratitude to the season’s sponsors and Power Committee volunteers, whose unwavering support ensures a successful year for the Club. The newly elected Power Captain and Past Commodore, Michael Cook, entertained guests with his easygoing banter, as they mingled and celebrated the upcoming season.

Sponsorship Officer Graham Philips successfully secured 13 sponsors for the 2023 season, earning well-deserved recognition from the Power Section. Guy Skinner, a fellow member, created a commemorative banner to display the sponsors’ logos as a token of appreciation.

As a gesture of goodwill, the committee offered discounted Cocktail Party tickets to members who registered early for the Time Trialling season. Funds raised through sponsorship will directly benefit participating members.

The Rapidly In Pursuit (RIP) Trophy presentation remains a highlight of the event. In keeping with tradition, last season’s champion hands over the handcrafted wooden coffin, containing a cut-off club necktie, to the runner-up boat. Commodore Troy presented the coveted RIP Trophy to Jason Claricoates, who spoke fondly of his wife Caroline and their shared passion for the sport, while eagerly anticipating the challenges of navigating his new boat this season.

The Power Section expressed its gratitude to Bernie Kaaks for capturing the memorable moments in a gallery of images.

As Opening Day approaches, members are reminded to prepare for the traditional sail past and time trial on Saturday, May 6th, beginning at 1 pm. The event promises an enjoyable day of camaraderie for Power Section members and their Club friends. Boats will parade and salute, donning nautical and novelty-themed decorations, with prizes and trophies awarded to the best-dressed vessels. Complimentary nibbles, refreshments, and cheese plates will be provided before the opening ceremony and during the announcement of the results, ensuring a festive atmosphere for all.
