Well done to SoPYC sailors Murray Duthie and Mara Lowry for their nominations for the Australian Sailing WA Sailing Awards 2022. Murray has been nominated for Youth Sailor of the Year and Mara for Female Sailor of the Year. Both nominations are well deserved as Murray and Mara enjoyed a fantastic sailing season.

Murray’s achievements so far are:

2021 Australian Sailing Youth State Championship – Optimist Open – 1st place
2021 Sail Freo  – Optimist Open – 1st place
2021 Open Skiff Perth Dinghy Regatta – Gold Fleet – 1st place
2021 Open Skiff State Championship – Gold Fleet – 4th place
2021 ICR  2021 – Optimist Open  – 1st place
2022 WAIODA  State Championship  – Optimist Open – 1st place
2022 RPYC Mini Series –  Optimist Open – 1st place
2022 Victorian State Youth Championship – Optimist Open – 3rd place
2022 East Coast Championship – Optimist Open – 6th place
2022 British National Championship – Optimist Open Junior – 5th place

Murray is heading to South Africa in September with the Australian Optimist Sailing Team to compete in the 2022 African Championship.

Mara is an experienced offshore sailor, sailing master, helm, navigator and can crew in all positions. Mara has participated in many of the Swan River Sailing, Keelboat State Championships and Interclubs for SoPYC since 2007 winning as helm in the 2017 Championships and 2021 Interclubs. Mara has completed thousands of ocean racing miles and is very passionate about the sport of sailing.

The club has nominated Mara for her ongoing contribution and support for Women’s sailing and racing at South of Perth Yacht Club. Mara is a valued and respected member of the Women’s squad and competition teams and her success has been an inspiration.
