Weekend Winter Series Racing Wrap-Up and Preparation Tips

Winter Series 13 August 2023

Some great techniques were on display from the juniors in the Winter series on the weekend.  Without naming everyone skills I saw in a lot of the sailors were:

  • Perfect posture
  • Accurate Steering and moding
  • Great Weight Placement

As always there are always things to work on as well

  • There were some issues with boat maintenance which is what prompted me to write the below piece on preparation. (Optimist Sprit ropes and cleats, leaking boats)
  • Don’t get distracted from good technique (Open Skiff tacking).  It’s important to do the techniques you are taught. Even though you can get away with different techniques, your coaches are not only training you with the skills you need now but also transition skills that you can take on to other boats as you progress

Preparation for Summer Sailing

For some, winter provides an opportunity to take a break and eagerly anticipate the arrival of summer. If you’re considering participating in events during January, beginning preparations in August is advisable. Presented below is a standard priority list for a 6-month campaign.

I recommend commencing preparations in August.

Logistics

When preparing for events, it’s essential to define your objectives and address logistical aspects. This encompasses arranging accommodations, transportation, boat charters, securing coaching assistance etc,

Equipment

Were there lessons learned last year that require major changes?  Different sails, spars, or systems to set up.  After doing your research spend time planning to acquire your race equipment and also make sure everything on your boat is repaired and ready for sailing.  You don’t want your training compromised by failing equipment

Body

Establishing strong foundational strength through exercises is crucial. This lays the groundwork for preparing the necessary muscles for upcoming intense training and acts as a preventive measure against injuries. It’s advisable to commence with a gradual approach.

Once a solid foundation is in place, consider a gradual shift in your training towards activities focused on cardiovascular fitness.
