When the South Perth Yacht Club’s Cruising Section had to cancel their planned long weekend cruise to Mindarie Quay due to an unexpected weather forecast, Dave Markham, had a simple, yet brilliant idea, all while trying to “Chase The Ace” at the Yachties Bar on Thursday evening with fellow Cruisers. He proposed that, given the decent weather forecast for Saturday, the group should consider an impromptu raft up in Matilda Bay This plan was quickly put into action thanks to the efforts of the Cruising Captain, Mike Irving, who communicated the new plan to the cruisers on Facebook.

Saturday afternoon provided the perfect weather for their impromptu gathering. Ten boats were anchored in Matilda Bay by 3 pm, creating a floating community for the afternoon. Amy and Tom Purdon’s ‘Black Boat’ provided a bit of extra fun, with Angela Irving taking some of the ladies for a cruise into Elizabeth Quay. Pete and Nic’s newly delivered Belize was also spotted nearby in the bay, adding to the picturesque scene.

As the evening approached, the group returned to the Club, where they found the Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club’s Power Section penned for the evening. The camaraderie continued on the Quarterdeck, with members gathered for a meal.

Dave’s simple idea and Mike’s quick communication turned what could have been a disappointing weekend into a pleasant day out on the water. The members of the South Perth Yacht Club’s Cruising Section demonstrated adaptability and resilience, making the most of the day despite the change in plans. It was a testament to the friendly and flexible spirit of the club.
