2023 Swan River Sailing Youth Keelboat Championships were sailed in very light European lake-like conditions with 1-3 knots of wind.
Thankfully Les Swinton and his Race Management team managed to find some wind for the young sailors to compete in.
With four short one-lap races, starting was critical and smooth, accurate trimming was essential for the teams to excel. The two RFBYC teams were the most consistent but both SoPYC teams showed incredible spirit, leading and placing in some of the races. It was inspiring to see these young sailors get the most out of their boats, smoothly gliding around the course.
Our first team was represented by a team of 29er sailors – Sam, Jamie, Annabelle, Jenna, Exel – and a laser sailor, Michael. Meanwhile, our second team consisted of windfoilers – Lachy, Ben, and Caitlin – and wingfoilers and keelboat sailors – Liam and Oliver – as well as a 29er and keelboat sailor, Zac.
Our teams finished 3rd and 4th, behind their peers from Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club and just in front of the team from Royal Perth Yacht Club.

We couldn’t be prouder of our talented young sailors, who showcased their incredible skills and teamwork throughout the championships.

Congratulations to all the teams who took part!
