Role of these programs...

It is a goal of SoPYC to increase participation amongst its sailing community on all levels. One of those is volunteering and event assistance. We are always on the lookout for eager members, parents and associates to help us provide awesome sailing experiences at the club.

These programs are designed to provide a wide array of skills to both teach and enhance your knowledge to allow you to provide to the different roles required for our racing and regatta events to go ahead and function smoothly and safely.

Some of these roles include; Support vessels (operation and rescue), mark laying, and race management.

A marine radio can save lives. It’s important that:

  • You know the correct channels to use, and how and when to use them
  • You know distress and safety procedures, including how to access search and rescue facilities
  • You know how to respond to an emergency call
  • Your messages are understood, and others know how to respond
  • You know what DSC is and the benefits of connecting a GPS to your radio
  • You know when and how to operate an EPIRB in a distress situation.

Please note the AWQ license is limited only to 12 nm to sea and is not internationally recognised.

This is a general course that would benefit all those at work, home or for leisure. The course provides an excellent general grounding in first aid and will enable you to perform appropriate first aid procedures and basic life support skills. This unit satisfies training requirements across a range of community and workplace settings.

Provide First Aid is recommended for anyone wanting to learn essential first aid skills or those needing a formal first aid certificate for work.

St John Ambulance recommends that you refresh your first aid training every 12 months.

This is also in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines that state CPR skills should be refreshed every 12 months.

This course provides the skills needed to support water-based activities at clubs, schools and outdoor recreation centers. You’ll learn about race course design, practice on-water rescue of dinghies and gain an awareness of techniques to support kite surfers and kayaks.

This course is designed for participants who wish to support their Sailing Club as a support boat for either racing or learn to sail courses.

This course is also a prerequisite for becoming a Sailing Coach.

Recreational Skippers Ticket and Power Boat Handling Course is a minimum pre-requisite for this course.

You will need to read the workbook prior to the training day.

Course Overview

This one-day course is designed to improve your boat handling skills, especially in confined areas such as marinas and in swell and waves. You will learn more about engines and types of crafts and practise navigation techniques on a passage. In some instances, you can take your completion certificate to your State Maritime Regulator and gain the State Boat License.

Course Prerequisites

Water confident. The skills and knowledge gained in Start Powerboating or equivalent power boating experience.

Who should do this course?

This course is designed for participants who wish to further develop their powerboat driving skills. This course is also a prerequisite for becoming a Dinghy and/or Windsurfing Instructor.
