South of Perth Yacht club has a proud ocean racing history, and this season we welcome back the ‘Pieces of Eight’ race for its second installment. A chance for each participant to etch their names in the newly created honour boards which recognize the immense participation and volunteering done by two of our club greats, Bernie Kaaks and Cherry Callcott.
This race provides a unique style that will navigate most Perth local waters and surrounding islands and sights. The course will primarily form a loose ‘figure of eight’ around Rottnest before heading inshore to traverse Cockburn sound and the open waters towards Scarborough and our coastal beaches and vistas.
At around 90 nautical miles, teams will enjoy a varied passage, and sail sets to complete the course. Designed to keep the whole crew busy, from the navigator to those grinding each tack or gibe – all onboard will need to be engaged and on their toes for the duration of the race!
This event provides a great opportunity for boats to compete in a ‘Bluewater’ event that may not normally do so, with the race to be completed very much within 24hrs for all that enter.
The local SS27 continues to show the way, proving ocean races are accessible to all. So come test yourself and your crew, there’s plunder to be had at the end!
