Information current as of 23rd January 2020
Dear members and friends,
The Department of Health (DoH) has upheld its warning regarding the toxic Alexandrium algal bloom in the Swan and Canning rivers. DoH is advising people not to eat fish, crabs or shellfish collected from within the Swan River, extending from Pelican Point to Como Jetty and upstream to Tonkin Highway Bridge, or within the Canning River, extending from the South of Perth Yacht Club to Como Jetty and upstream to Kent Street Weir. A map of the impacted area is attached. Alexandrium toxins can cause paralytic shellfish poisoning and cooking will not destroy these toxins.

Please see the latest DoH media statement at https://ww2.health.wa.gov.au/Media-releases/2020/Algal-bloom-warning-extends-to-Canning-River.

The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions continues to conduct weekly water quality monitoring at an increased number of sites to track the extent of the bloom. We are also testing mussels and blue swimmer crabs for the Alexandrium toxin. DoH and local riverfront councils have arranged for health warning signs advising against crabbing, shellfish collection and fishing to be erected at key riverfront locations including jetties, boat ramps and key accessible foreshore areas within the affected region. It should be noted that swimming and other aquatic recreational activities on the Swan and Canning rivers are not impacted by the algal bloom, but as a general rule swimming should be avoided in areas of discoloured water.

Further information is provided in detail on Alexandrium and FAQ’s here and through this link
or contact the Department of Health on 9222 2000 or visit HealthyWA.

RTYF
It is the time of year to invite Members of the WA yachting fraternity (particularly the ones that support the Ron Tough Yachting Foundation!) to apply for some financial assistance to progress and enable them to achieve their dream of sailing success. If you would like further information about the Foundation, please enquire further or look at our website: www.rontoughyachtingfoundation.com.au

Please be aware that there are definite criteria that have to be met by successful applicants and the Board of RTYF is governed by them. See the website for the relevant terms and conditions - and RTYF hopes that Members will read them carefully! It is important to recognise that the aim of RTYF is to improve the overall standard of sailing in WA and so importance is placed on encouraging sailors to travel overseas to compete, learn and then mentor their peers on return.

There is only one meeting per year to decide the awards, the Board’s decision is final and no further correspondence will be entered into! Also, please note that applications close on Monday 10th February.

Sailors in Western Australia today are so fortunate to have this Foundation available to them, providing small financial encouragements and support to assist them to enjoy the sport of sailing. It is all thanks to the foresight and generosity of previous generations of keen sailors, yacht club members and particularly the Board Members of RTYF that, through careful custodianship over the last 40 years, have made it all possible.

Head Coach Report 4 Feb 2020

I spent the weekend at Fremantle coaching the Flying 15's at their Worlds Practice Event over the weekend, which was very interesting. Saturday had a building Seabreeze from 10 to 22 knots and Sunday a fading Easterly from 18 to 2 knots.  So a very good range of conditions to experience all in two days. I outlined a few key …

A message from Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions

Rottnest Island Fuel Jetty

It’s been another busy summer on Rottnest, with record numbers of people enjoying our wonderful Island.

With increasing visitor numbers, the Rottnest Island Authority is committed to ensuring all facilities are supporting this growth.

As part of State Government funding, the $3 million redevelopment of Rottnest Island’s Fuel Jetty is underway, with tenders for its demolition and reconstruction being sought.

The new jetty will offer many benefits to the Island, including a new deck, additional power and water facilities, new finger jetties, improved refuelling/berthing for smaller vessels and an extended end platform. More details can be found at www.ria.wa.gov.au/news.

Demolition and construction is due to begin in April 2020.

I wanted to write and inform your club and your members that during the demolition and reconstruction period, there will be disruptions and inconvenience for people who use the Fuel Jetty. In most cases, boat owners will need to make alternative arrangements.

If you have any queries or are seeking more information about the Fuel Jetty project, please contact our Communication and Media Manager Kent Acott on 0419 942 278 or at kent.acott@dbca.wa.gov.au.
