Head Coach Report 6 August 2019

We have new U17 World Champions from SoPYC. Well Done!
Below: Michael Compton in the Laser Radial Youth U17 division. Also 3rd overall.
1 Michael
Below: Axel Fleet and Kieran Bucktin - Winners in the U17 division of the 29er World Championship and 21st overall.
2 Axel and Kieren
3 Axel and Kieren 23
ABOVE: The boys in Number 23 with a good start mid line.
Congratulations to all our sailors that competed. Lots of very good memories and lessons that can only be experienced at these big events.

Lasers Report - Kingston Canada - Youth Laser Radial World Championships
With Michael, also attending were Stefan Elliott-Shircore, Caitlin Shaw and coach Ben Walkemeyer all from SoPYC.

It was a gruelling six-day event with 160 competitors in the boys fleet and 48 in the girls!

After six days of racing, Michael Compton put together a fantastic finals series starting the qualifying series with two wobbly races but came home strong in the finals with top 10 scores which included 3 bullets in a row rocketing him up the rankings to the Bronze Medal, congratulations Michael. Stefan Elliott-Shircore also had a strong regatta finishing in 16th place overall and 3rd U17, a very credible result. Caitlin Shaw finished 24th in her fleet with some strong individual race performances.

29er Report - 29er World Championship in Gydnia Poland
SoPYC, WASS and WAIS sailors Kieran Bucktin and Axel Fleet competed against 175 boats from around the world.
A big 'well done' to the boys who finished 21st overall in the Gold Fleet and winners of the U17 World Championship! The regatta was characterised by very light winds with only a few races early in the qualifying series allowing the boys to stretch their legs. The team showed their speed and skills in these conditions with strong race performances early in the regatta including a World Championship Heat Win!

Winter training resumed last weekend with 29 sailors kicking off the restart. Coaches are meeting this week to start tweaking the training program for the rest of winter, so the learning objectives are clearly defined by the start of the summer season.

Flying Fifteen Report 6 August 2019

For those with selective amnesia and have got into the habit of sleeping in on weekends, yes, the Schweppes Solo Applecross Cup winter regatta continues this Sunday with a start time of 1300hrs so maybe a little sleep in. The weather looks perfect so either front up or concoct your best excuse with points to be awarded accordingly.
Please don’t forget to RSVP for the Worlds Farewell dinner which is on this Saturday. It makes perfect sense to farewell sailors going to an event in Ireland from an Indian restaurant!
Ten-pin bowling beforehand to work up an appetite.
Russell.

Sailing the Abrolhos Islands on Farrago

“It's a bit late in the year for the Abrolhos isn't it?” A dockside spectator offered up this gem as we prepared to set sail. More on that later.

Early birds for the Sunday race last month may have noticed Farrago heading away from the start line with Graeme Brown, Peter Vlaar, Sonia Johnson aboard. With the necessary jobs completed, but a hundred things left to do, we were off for two weeks in the Abrolhos Islands. After a brief stop at FSC and we were underway in a good breeze at 8pm. The forecast was not ideal and the intention was to head to Geraldton first. Fortunately, the weather improved and so on a perfect Tuesday afternoon, we moored at the Coral Patches in the Abrolhos Islands instead. By Friday we were in the Easter Group, exploring Morley and Wooded islands. A young sea lion swam up to see if we would play. Its relaxed and inquisitive manner was totally captivating. That was one of many highlights on the trip that included whales, dolphins and sea eagles. We mastered the challenge of carefully easing our way into perfect bays and moorings when the charts were clearly optimistic. We enjoyed sumptuous meals and freshly baked bread while being completely relaxed and out of mobile phone range. Turtle Bay at East Wallabi Island was so perfect we stayed for three days. Geraldton Sea Rescue kept a watch over us and updated weather on VHF every morning. Farrago initially had a much longer and grander winter cruise planned, as events transpired this was the trip that was possible. It was a lifetime memory made and enjoyed in the time available. Beautiful and isolated, the Abrolhos is a great destination easily achievable many SoPYC yachts. A surprising number of our B fleet yachts have already been there. It is a great side trip for anyone heading to Geraldton.

Now we are back I know to reply “not really” to our dockside spectator. Perhaps the “weather window” is as important as the month?
