Frank Dalglish the donor of the trophy is the patriarch of a “dynasty” we all know well. Between Frank and Barb and their sons Troy and Paul, since the 1980s, the Dalglish family have been involved in almost every section and every role of our yacht club. Head Coach Report

The larger winter training block is now over and some lucky teams head overseas to compete in their class World Junior Championships:

In the Laser, five of SoPYC’s top Laser sailors travel to Kingston, Canada for the Laser Radial Youth World Championship and Laser 4.7 Youth World Championship.
We wish the best of luck to Caitlin Shaw, Stefan Elliott-Shircore, Michael Compton and Zac Littlewood as they compete in the Laser Radial Worlds from 26th – 31st July, and Toby Coote as he competes in the Laser 4.7 Worlds from 18th – 23rd August.
Our sailors are in good hands with SoPYC’s Laser coach, Ben Walkemeyer, being selected to coach the Australian team at both World Championships.
Congratulations to all of our sailors and Ben for their selection in the Australian team, we’ll be cheering you on! You can follow the results of the Laser Radial Worlds here and the Laser 4.7 Worlds here. Below is some last-minute practise at the Applecross Cup over the weekend.

2 Laser Youngsters
In the 29er, SoPYC’s Axel and Kieren head off to the 29er Worlds in Poland. They have been training hard, often 5 days of sailing, plus fitness since the end of the summer season.
Here’s a photo of them at last weekend’s Applecross cup avoiding the Opti’s around the bottom mark. A great weekend of racing with all the classes mixing together and a healthy respect for each other and the rules. One of the Opti sailors (James) was even able to retrieve a hat that flew off a 29er sailor in a crossing and return it.

Results can be followed here https://29erworlds.org/results/
3 29er & Opti
SoPYC was host to the WA Optimist fleet training camp over the weekend which leads into their racing for the Applecross Cup. 12 sailors attended which was a good turn out considering being in the middle of the school holidays. Here is an image from the racing:

Nice to see a large turnout of the Moth class mixing it up with all the fleets in preparation for the Worlds in Perth in December.

10 29ers
11 29er 12 and 14yr old girls
12 and 14 year old Drina and Annabelle sweating it down on the trapezoid course overlay.

WARNING to Rottnest Boaters!

The first decent break in the weather and Rottnest does not look so far away. We have just received this message from the Rottnest Authority that “Repairs are underway to the FUEL SUPPLY” - so anyone going to Rottnest must ensure that they have sufficient for a RETURN TRIP. ULP is still available – but that could quickly change. So if you are thinking of Rottnest – Return trip fuel is a must! If you have any doubts – Don’t Go!
Rottnest Island Authority will signal the “all clear” when the repairs are finalised!

SAILING SEASON 2019-2020
Members are cordially invited to participate in the 2019-2020 sailing season. We’re expecting great things this summer!

Please view the new Notice of Race – click here.

Schedule of Events 2019-2020
The new season’s program is now published on the website. Members are encouraged to peruse the program and plan accordingly. Please click here.

Nominations
SoPYC is now taking entries for the new season. Please click here to get started.

Saturday JAM Series – Please note this new event for the coming summer season. Boats entering the Saturday Series will note a tick box about halfway down the nomination screen under the ENTRY OPTIONS. You may choose to enter your normal Saturday division as well as the JAM division if you wish to try both at some stage. The JAM Series has been setup to allow members that prefer not to hoist the kite but remain competitive amongst like-minded boats.

Red Book 2019-2020
The new edition of the Red Book will be available in September and will include the Notice of Race and Schedule of Events as well as other handy inclusions. At the same time the various sailing instructions will also be published and available from the On Water Group office.

Yacht Safe
All Keelboat owners who nominated their boat for racing last season should have received an email via Yacht Safe yesterday. The email explains that a profile in Yacht Safe has been setup for those owners allowing them to complete an Equipment Audit Form online. Please note, the paper version of the Equipment Audit forms still exist, have not changed and can still be submitted as part of your nomination in the 2019 – 2020 season.
SoPYC is the first club in Western Australian to adopt Yacht Safe and among only a handful of yacht clubs throughout Australia.
Please feel free to try it out. You won’t break the system.

The paper version of the forms are available at the bottom of this linked webpage or from the OWG office. Keelboats racing on Swan River during daylight hours will require Cat 7 unless advised in separate or supplementary NoR & SIs.

Please ensure you have submitted the appropriate form before your first race.

Off The Beach boats will continue to use the paper version for this coming season. Yacht Safe profiles for OTB skippers will be created in time for the following 2020-2021 season.

We have already received 3 successful Cat 7 submissions from Natalouka, Bluegrass and Sonatine via Yacht Safe. Looking forward to receiving more soon!

Safety Lanyards

Marine Safety has released a new page on its website focusing on “Safety lanyards” www.transport.wa.gov.au/imarine/44123.asp

The page has been developed to promote the increased wear of the safety feature due to a number of incidents in WA that may have been avoided with the use of a safety lanyard which automatically stops a vessel’s motor if the skipper falls overboard or leaves the steering position.

A safety lanyard, also known as a kill switch, has a quick-release fitting at one end attached to the vessel motor or console and at the other end is a clip attached to the skipper. The coiled design allows the driver the natural movement required when driving a boat. A sudden movement away from the driving position means the lanyard will detach and the engine will stop.

When attaching the clip to the skipper special care needs to be taken to ensure it stays attached. Marine Safety recommends you loop the lanyard around your wrist, leg or ankle and attach the clip to secure it. If the clip is attached to clothing it could fall off.

Boat Insurance
SoPYC boats need not submit copies of their Certificate of Insurance together with their boat nomination. Only when your boat insurance policy is renewed do we require a copy of your latest insurance details. Copies can be delivered to the front Administration office or emailed to secretary@sopyc.com.au. Boats are not eligible to race without a valid third-party liability insurance cover of at least $10 million per incident.

IGA Canning Bridge Frostbite Series
This Sunday Frostbite race no. 6 in this exciting 10 race series. The top placed scores are still very close and certainly no boat is walking away unchallenged.
There is still time to enter your boat. Simply email the Sailing Administrator sailingadministrator@sopyc.com.au and your entry will be made for you.
Geraldton Ocean Classic Race & Rally – Saturday 12 October 2019
