What's on this week: 24 November 2020
It is with regret that we advise members that Fiona Whife has resigned to work in the family business and finishes her role as Food & Beverage Manager on Friday 4th December after having worked diligently for SoPYC for 12 years. We have been fortunate in securing the services of Michael Ribuado who has been appointed to the position of Food & Beverage Manager from 1st December, 2020.
Michael's recent work history is that he was Events Planning Manager at Crown for 4 years moving in 2018 to open the F&B department at QT Hotel, a new establishment in Perth. He spent 18 months there. Under his stewardship, the QT Hotel Santini Grill was recognised as Best New Restaurant, Restaurant of the Year and rated as number 1 restaurant in the WA Food Guide Awards. He has also worked with Accor Hotels and The Vines.

Members will have noticed the appearance in recent days of Greenbatch bins at the head of each jetty. These bins are for container deposit (10 cent) recepticals. We have entered into a partnership with Rotary Club of Melville to provide this service. General glass bins will be added over the next week or so. Shortly, boat owning members will be receiving a SoPYC Greenbatch card and “onion” bag to help recycle the containers that have a 10 cent refund. The card has the details of the SoPYC scheme so funds will go to the Club which in turn will be shared with Rotary Club of Melville and junior activities. More information will come to hand in Soundings which will be coming out in December.

Message from the Archive Research Team
We are appealing to members to look through old photo albums, boxes in the back of cupboards and out in the garage to help create an archive for the Club marking the 75-year celebrations. If you find anything you think the team might like to see please contact the Archive Research Team, Bernie Kaaks, Rick Steuart and Amanda Watson. The era we are looking into specifically at this stage is the new Club 1970 – 1980. If members have any old Year Books, Soundings or newsletters pre 2000 we would love to hear from you.

Power Yacht Owners – Please read!
As we enter the holiday season, boating activity on the Swan River increases dramatically. Many dinghy classes hold their championships at this time of year with courses that cut across the usual transit paths of pleasure boats heading for Fremantle or Rottnest Island or returning to their marina. The stern wave from power craft can have a huge impact on …

Santa has a new sleigh
Seen out on the water on last Wednesday on Glenn Thomas’s new (to him) rocket ship a Farr 30 ‘Problem Child’. Given that we had at least 20 knots on the bottom and gusting to 30, young Olly who was running the main had the job in hand. And had the correctness to wear most of a Santa suit for …

Plenty of breeze on Sunday took it’s toll on body and boat leaving only 4 boats to face the starter for the third race. A few fibreglass splinters floating around the top mark from Richard’s boat saw him unable to finish the second race and the forgetful folks on Follow Us managed to break gooseneck number 7. Tim blames Plonky and Plonky blames Tim, it’s a never-ending story.
Every Sunday is a key date in the Flying Fifteen program but the lead up to Christmas seems to put this into overdrive. Starting this Sunday with the first of the “Jerwood sessions” where, at 10.30am, Nick will be explaining the variables associated with mast set up. The following Sunday, December the 6th, will focus on the various controls available and when to use them.
The weekend of the 12th and 13th will have the Tally Hobbs Regatta sailed in Melville Water West (Saturday) and our home track on Sunday. Nominations are required for this and the NOR has been circulated.
If you haven’t had enough fun by then, the Christmas party follows racing on the 13th were we will be reclining (or collapsing) in the wardroom and taking in the best view in Perth while being served dinner. Bookings are required for this and can be handled through the office.
Nominations are also required for the regatta with the funny name that kicks off on January 4th. That’s next year which is just a heartbeat away.
