What's on this week: 6 October 2020

Dear reader,
The weekend has been one of milestones and achievements. On Sunday SoPYC celebrated the opening of the 75th Summer Sailing Season and did so in style. Members and guests from our kindred clubs were appropriately impressed and acknowledged the wonderful day to Commodore John Midolo. In what we believe to be an Australian yacht club first, Whadjuk Noongar Elder, Marie Taylor, was invited to become Elder in Residence for the club, a role she was delighted and proud to accept. Marie welcomed members and guests to country and summoned the good sprits to join us and banished the bad spirits from the club through a traditional smoking ceremony. Patron, Life Member and Past Commodore, Colin Cowden, officially opened the season having recounted his memories of the Club through his 66 years of membership from a junior sailor to present day.

We are also delighted to be able to inform members that Head Chef, Maverick Cuthbert, was recognised for his culinary skills at the Restaurant and Catering Awards evening on Monday 5th October by being awarded with Western Australian Chef of The Year. Congratulations Maverick! A very well deserved award and a recognition we will shout from the rooftop!

75th Summer Season Opening Day

We were blessed with fine weather and just the right amount of wind to herald in Opening Day. All the usual traditions were recognised. Guests gathered on the lawns before being ushered into the Ballroom passing through the smoking ceremony conducted by Whadjuk Noongar Elder Marie Taylor. Colin Cowden, the Club's Patron, Life Member and Past Commodore, addressed the assembled guests recounting his memories of the Club from its time in Como until the move to Applecross and our present time. Marie Taylor was presented with a framed burgee and Honorary Membership in recognition of her role as Whadjuk Noongar Elder in Residence. This is a first for an Australian yacht club and puts SoPYC at the forefront of recognising the significant cultural origins and uses of the recently renamed Goolugatup Heathcote land. It is to be hoped that the mural designed by Tjyllyungoo (Lance Chadd), an international Nyoongah/Yamatji artist and local elder in 2017 as part of the jetty 4-5 project depicting the history of the Derbarl Yerrigan and Djarlgarra (Swan and Canning Rivers) will be a project completed as part of the 75th Anniversary commemoration.

112 boats participated in the sail past with many skippers and crews dressing their boats vying for the best dressed boat, a prize sponsored by Abbotts Chartered Accountants. The best dressed boat was Farrago, closely followed by the Bluegrass and Sagacious in third place.

Bluegrass went on to win the Patron’s Trophy.

Visiting sports boats and S80’s along with SoPYC keelboat fleets and OTB fleets presented a lively afternoons’ sailing with all the usual mishaps with sail handling, running aground and boat rescues by Heathcote and its crew. A selection of photos is available through the link below.

The bar and Quarterdeck were well attended for afternoon tea and results with many members having enjoyed lunch and dinner at the club too.

SoPYC Head Chef – Western Australia Chef of The Year

On behalf of the Flag Officers and Management Committee we are delighted to be able to inform members that Head Chef, Maverick Cuthbert, was recognised for his culinary skills at the Restaurant and Catering Awards evening on Monday 5th October by being awarded with Western Australian Chef of The Year. His award plaque also recognises South of Perth Yacht Club.

Maverick is a truly talented chef dedicated to his craft and the awards he has won recognise his skills. His next foray is the Nestle Golden Chef’s Hat Award as the WA Representative. He was a silver medallist in 2016 and 2018 and winning silver and bronze in 2019.
Mav, as he is known, has been an award-winning chef since 2015. He has been so successful that the list is extensive so an abridged summary of his successes starting in 2016 is four awards, 2017 four awards, six awards in 2018 and four awards in 2019. In 2020 he is the recipient of three awards with a possible fourth on the horizon.
Congratulations Maverick. We know the pride with which you approach your work and we are thrilled you are part of the club.

Flying 15
It didn’t really feel like summer on Sunday with the wind and water not quite up to temperature, but the gun went to open the season anyway and the smallish fleet of 9 fifteens had a brisk ride around a rather bumpy track with a couple of drifting marks late in the day keeping the navigators on their toes.

Fresh from winning the State Championships last weekend, Nick nailed the pin end for the start of the first race and promptly missed the toe straps and cooled off for a while. Results can be found in the usual place.

Next week we have the first 2 heats of the Club Championship so a good opportunity to roll out the good sails.

Below: Nick and Brad receiving the silverware from FFIWA President Peter Mudford following their winning of the State Championship which was sailed off Fremantle over the long weekend.
