The 2021 SUP Australia Day Challenge proved conclusively that it’s all about technique and that gender is irrelevant. The fabulous duo of Victoria Blanckensee and Angela Irving socked it to the boys with a decisive all -the-way win.
Consisting of three triangular laps, the challenge was not for the faint of heart. Temperatures were well below normal for this time of year and the Fremantle Doctor sent picnic chairs skittering across the lawn. Teams of two lined up for the start after a quick briefing and “how to” guide from Head Coach Denis Jones. The first member of each team set out for their lap of the course, to be followed by the second team member. The third lap consisted of both riders on the same board.
Victoria Blanckensee showed her experience on these craft by setting up a healthy lead over her rivals. Showing great style, Angela Irving defended the lead well, but in the final “two up” lap, the boys started to close in, showing superior technique with the passenger lying prone at the back of the board and using both hands and feet to assist the paddler. At the final mark they were within touching distance but the girls re-grouped and powered away for a well-deserved win.

Styles adopted by board riders were interesting. The experienced SUP riders unhesitatingly stood up from the get-go and had little difficulty despite the solid sea breeze. The less experienced opted for a kneeling position, which worked up to appoint but with far less leverage on the paddle, lacked power. There was even one rider who dispensed with the paddle and lying prone on the board, paddled with both hands. It turned out to be a safe but slow option.
Full marks to the brave souls who took part in the fun, cheered on by a flotilla of flag bedecked power boats and watched by a sizeable group of picnickers gathered on the lawns, where kids played a form of volleyball, soccer or maybe hand tennis. Whatever it was, they had heaps of fun, too.
Dreamed up at short notice by Rear Commodore Troy Dalglish, the day was well supported, suggesting that it may well appear as an annual event on Australia Day.

Here is another fine example of a home built boat - Don Bourne's beautiful H28 Wynella, seen here on a jinker, ready to travel to the river for launching. Wynella has won her share of club championship and is still in the Club, performing well for her current owner, Glenn Stanley. (Photo courtesy Don Bourne, collection held by Rick Steuart).

Most boats in the 1950’s and 60’s were home built. This is Past Commodore Merton Grey’s “Serene” under construction.
Serene had a successful offshore record at the time.
