This year’s Hobart sees a total of SEVEN WA entries as well as strong representation from SoPYC.

The boats to look out for are:

43218 Abbott’s Vamp, a Corby 49 launched initially as Limit for Alan Brierty and chartered by Club member Chris Higham for the race. Principal helmsman will be Paul Eldrid and a number of Club members are included in the crew, including of course, sail maker Rees Howell who spearheads the youth campaign on Chris Higham’s Argo.

6836 Anger Management, a Salona 44 based in Esperance and sailed by Tim Stewart.

EF3601 Crush, a Jeanneau Sunfast 3600 sailed by David Davenport from East Fremantle Yacht Club.

F1701 Enterprise, a Farr 40 sailed by Anthony Kirke, who many members would remember sailed out of South of Perth in his Archambault 35 before buying the Farr 40 and moving to Fremantle Sailing Club. This will be the second successive year that the yacht has competed in the Great Race.

R39 Jaffa, a Runnalls 39 designed by Malcom Runnalls in the days when he ran his design office out of Fremantle. Still competing with his original Royal Perth Yacht Club number R39, skipper Terry Posma has recruited Past Commodore Guy Skinner to join him for the race.

CR1 Optimus Prime, a Marten 49 sailed by Past Commodore Trevor Taylor of the Cruising Yacht Club in Rockingham. Trevor is a vastly experienced sailor who has also done a full round the world race on a Clipper yacht and with son Daniel, competed successfully in the double handed Melbourne-Osaka race – not a bad effort for two guys on a 49 footer!

Chris Hind, the past Captain of our SoPYC Ocean Racing Section. Chris unfortunately arrived too late for the group photo, but he is sailing on the Tasmania based Peterson 41, Natelle Two. Laura Roper, the yacht’s owner, is one of the few female skippers in the race.

Decorated Perth yachtie Luke Parkinson joins the super maxi Scallywag, an Andy Dovell designed 100 footer.

Veteran navigator Kingsley Piesse rejoins Melbourne’s Bruce Taylor on Chutzpah. This will be Kingsley’s 37th Sydney to Hobart Race (That wasn’t a misprint – he’s completed 36 hobarts!)

Mark Loader will sail on Secret Men’s Business, a Murray 42 previously based in Bunbury and now owned by Sydney sailor David de Coster.

Those who were able to, attended an informal farewell function at Fremantle Sailing Club last Sunday afternoon (see photo attached).

Kind regards,

Bernie Kaaks

Tight Racing in Viper State Championships

The Viper 640 class held its State Championships at South of Perth Yacht Club last weekend. A quality fleet of 9 boats sailing in 8 races over two days in varying conditions, provided great racing and a few spills.

Saturday morning saw westerly winds gusting to 24 knots with 30 degree wind shifts making for big gains (and losses). Rod Beurteaux handled the conditions best being the only boat not to have a spill and ended the day with 3 wins and a second. The annual BBQ lunch of gourmet fish tacos and premium wine saw the Viper class doing what they do best – socialising.

Sunday morning had 3 races in transition winds making for difficult racing. Past Viper World Champion Nick Jerwood showed his uncanny skills to score three wins. The seabreeze finally arrived and conditions were set for an intriguing battle with Jerwood leading by one point going into the last race. A recall on the start saw 3 boats go back including Jerwood. Beurteaux took an unassailable lead and won the title for a second year in succession. Jerwood was second with Albany sailor Michael Cameron taking out third.

A further reminder to members using the hardstand car park. Please park only in designated car park bays not land pen bays particularly if a land pen may appear vacant.

Unfortunately, there are increasing complaints about owners of cars parked in front of land pens and leaving their vehicles and blocking boat access. Some vessels are guilty of blocking car parking bays also. Cars parked in land pens are being damaged.

This is leading to conflict between vehicle drivers and the boat owners, whose pens have been blocked. Please respect the needs of the boat owner who pays an annual fee for the pen which may have been blocked by a member unthinkingly.

Also, a reminder to launching ramp boat users not to block off multiple car park bays which may be compounding vehicles being parked in front of land pens.
