Parking after using the launch ramp

It is important that all members who are using the launch ramp do not block other vessels or causal parking bays as depicted in the image below. Members are to park their trailer and/or vessel within the allocated lines and park their car in the car park. This gives more members the opportunity to leave their trailer and/or vessel in the parking area. If vehicles and trailers are not parked correctly a wheel clamp will be applied.

Saturday Keelboat Sign-Ons
Starting this Saturday new Sign On procedures will be implemented for all competing Keelboats in competing in the Saturday Summer Series.
A personalised (boat based) SMS message is sent to each owner on the day of the race. It provides a link where the owner can go to indicate whether they intend to race or not and how many people are on board (PoB). They can return to tick a “retired” box if they wish. This is done on a race by race basis. It does not collect crew details, just numbers.

For those without mobile phones, you may sign on via a paper sheet located in the foyer outside the OWG office. If there are any changes to PoB following sign-on, please radio this information to SoPYC Race Control via VHF ch. 77 prior to the first fleet’s 1st warning signal.

Billy Run 2019 Report

The Billy Run aims to encourage yachts to venture under the bridges and out on the big blue.
The 2019 Billy Run got underway on a windy Saturday morning. Special thanks to David Barton for providing Sovereign 8 as the start boat. It was a race where yachts had diverse opinions when was the actual start, which mark was Q etc, etc...

A bunched fleet rounded channel marker C and formed even more opinions about the best way down the channel. By channel marker 12 Twitch had a lead over Scalloway, with Vision and Jindara right behind. It is a joy to race in the clean ocean water and spend more than an hour on the same tack. By race end, Twitch had streaked away to an impressive line honours result. Most of the fleet experienced up to 25 knots as they rounded the last few marks. Tim Harrison and crew on the SS27 Vision mastered the strong weather to take home the “Billy Can”. Well done to the SS27’s for forming their own fleet with Force Five and Chain Reaction also starting.

A post-race party on the moorings created a real holiday feel, then TCYC turned on its usual hospitality and a beautiful sunset. The herbed hot chips and gravy were a big hit amongst the crews.

After a night on the sheltered moorings and breakfast on the coffee strip, a calm sunny Sunday morning provided a lovely trip back.
Hopefully, we are doing it again in 2020.

This Friday sees the start of the 71st Bunbury and Return Ocean Race (a passage race of 170nm) run by RFYC, starting off Leighton Beach at 1730hrs. Two yachts owned by South of Perth Yacht Club members will be competing in this Cat 3+ race, Argo (Chris Higham) and Twitch (Barry Walsh), but in addition to these two owners, there are numerous SoPYC members crewing on different boats for this offshore race.

In the sad aftermath of last year’s race, in which Rob Thomas and Paul Owens died after the yacht Finistere lost its keel near Mandurah, safety regulations have been beefed up and no doubt some of the competitors in last year’s race will shed a tear as they pass the point where Finistere capsized.
The course takes yachts to a Day buoy, then to Western South Passage Transit Beacon before heading to a turning mark at Bunbury. From Bunbury, yachts will head back up the coast to Western South Passage Transit Beacon, Hall Bank Beacon and then to the South Mole Finish.

You can follow the race on the Yellowbrick Tracker (a free app for your phone or tablet or visit RFBYC website for the link).

Flying Fifteen Club Report

Last weekend was comparatively quiet, with some crews away either interstate or overseas. However, the fleet of seven enjoyed balmy conditions and tight racing, all finishing within three minutes of each other. Well done to Peter Rooke with two wins, and Richard Blaquiere one. Also, Anne and Andy took Fastest Time in all races.

Looking forward to seeing you all at next week’s club championship heats.
