SOUTH OF PERTH YACHT CLUB
In line with good governance practice, the Management Committee have requested that the Governance Committee review the South of Perth Yacht Club’s Rules and By Laws to ensure that they are fit for purpose whilst remaining compliant with the Associations Incorporation Act.
The current set of Rules and ByLaws were adopted in May 2019 response to the root and branch overhaul of the Associations Incorporation Act which was introduced in July 2016. Since then, there have been a number of clauses identified as being ambiguous and/or open to interpretation, as well as a number of omissions, together with various drafting inconsistencies.
As the Rules and By Laws are the principal governance documents of the Club, by providing the foundation for its existence and operation, member input into this review is very important.
To that end, the Governance Committee is seeking your views and input on changes that you believe could be incorporated into these documents.
This can be done by emailing comments and/or suggestions to governance@sopyc.com.au or by contacting the Chair of the Governance Committee, Phillip Draber, in person or on 0418 293 051.
Following the review, any proposed changes to the Rules and By Laws recommended by the Governance Committee and if they are considered appropriate by the Management Committee, they will be presented to members for approval at a general meeting.
We look forward to your suggestions and ideas.
Chair, Governance Committee.

Sailability had to cancel its third session of the 2021/2022 sailing season due to poor weather conditions. The safety of our participants and volunteers is paramount.
The Sailability sponsor of the week is Bunnings at Melville. Bunnings wrote to SoPYC offering assistance to not for profit organisations and this was forwarded to Sailability. Subsequently Bunnings has generously donated materials to fit out our Sailability storage container with shelving plus other merchandise.
Thank you to Bunnings at Melville.
Sailability at SoPYC is run by a group of dedicated club members and active volunteers every Wednesday morning giving disabled participants each week the joy and experience of sailing.
We have a waiting list of disabled people wanting to sail but are we limited by not having enough volunteers to assist. Volunteers are always welcome – contact Liz on 0419 949 006 or email sailabilitysopyc@gmail.com

The first Club Championship heats of the season was a keenly fought affair with the fleet of 22 boats being the largest in a number of seasons. Moderate conditions and the tight racing meant there were plenty of circles being performed following (mostly) minor infringements. Andy and Anne (A2) got an early jump on the fleet in race 1 before Andy found himself further outside the sheerline than he would prefer due to some broken hobbles. Mike and Paul (Ineffable) fought tooth and nail with Nick and Brad (Reliance) before getting the gun. Nia, sailing with Connor on Spot the Difference, was second over the line however retired due to missing the spreader mark leaving Greg and Nick (The Answer) officially second.
The breeze kicked up a notch for race 2 and the usual suspects worked their way to the front with Greg and Nick (The Answer) getting the gun followed by Nick and Brad (Reliance) and those Dunbar boys (Ineffable).
With so many stories in the bar afterwards, a couple of large dinner tables were required to fully expound on the afternoon’s proceedings. Thanks to Mary-Anne and David for sorting that out and to the Food and Beverage people efficiently handling a rather awkward booking.
Great to welcome Sharon back. What we learnt this week, we’ll put into practice next week.
