SOUTH OF PERTH YACHT CLUB

GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE

Rules and By Laws Review
SoPYC_logo
In line with good governance practice, the Management Committee have requested that the Governance Committee review the South of Perth Yacht Club’s Rules and By Laws to ensure that they are fit for purpose whilst remaining compliant with the Associations Incorporation Act.

The current set of Rules and ByLaws were adopted in May 2019 response to the root and branch overhaul of the Associations Incorporation Act which was introduced in July 2016. Since then, there have been a number of clauses identified as being ambiguous and/or open to interpretation, as well as a number of omissions, together with various drafting inconsistencies.

As the Rules and By Laws are the principal governance documents of the Club, by providing the foundation for its existence and operation, member input into this review is very important.
To that end, the Governance Committee is seeking your views and input on changes that you believe could be incorporated into these documents.

This can be done by emailing comments and/or suggestions to governance@sopyc.com.au or by contacting the Chair of the Governance Committee, Phillip Draber, in person or on 0418 293 051.

Following the review, any proposed changes to the Rules and By Laws recommended by the Governance Committee and if they are considered appropriate by the Management Committee, they will be presented to members for approval at a general meeting.

We look forward to your suggestions and ideas.

Phillip Draber
Chair, Governance Committee.

Sailability has started its 2021/2022 sailing season with 11 of our valued volunteers having just completed a full days first aid course conducted by the Royal Lifesaving Association of WA which was paid for out of our section’s funds.

SoPYC and Sailability is conducting the Hansa State Championships 26 to 28 November. The dinghies used by Sailability are made by Hansa. This event is designed for disabled persons with assistance from some SoPYC juniors.
Sailability at SoPYC is run by a group of dedicated and active volunteers every Wednesday morning giving 30 disabled participants each week the joy and experience of sailing.
We have a waiting list of disabled people wanting to sail but are we limited by not having enough volunteers to assist. Volunteers always welcome – contact Liz on 0419 949 006 or sailabilitysopyc@gmail.com

Enterprise Next Gen shows her class

In perfect conditions for a coastal offshore race, a fleet of 17 yachts took part in South of Perth Yacht Club’s Centaur Run, on a course taking yachts out to Rottnest Island, across to Hillarys and back again under the watchful eye of Offshore Race Officer Cameron Berg.

Anthony Kirke and Andrew Nuttman’s position was strengthened by the absence of Indian and she had little trouble in surging to the front of the fleet early and holding that lead to a comfortable line honours win, taking the top gong for the IRC trophy in the process. Geoff Bishop’s Checkmate finished second on both handicap systems.

In division Ian Clyne’s 2 Joss II made the running to also take the double, albeit with a much closer margin, Crush finishing a little more than two minutes behind. Ross Norgard’s classic Salacia showed that traditional designs still have what it takes, finishing second to Joss II on both IRC and PHS handicaps.

Three double handers – Fat Bottom Girl, Kraken and The Edge ensured that they received a separate result for their endeavours and in a close outcome David Davenport’s the Edge won on PHS while Todd Giraudo’s ever-consistent Kraken won on IRC.

The Club now has a long wait for its next ocean race – the Geraldton Ocean Classic – which is due to start on the first Saturday in May, 2022.
