SOUTH OF PERTH YACHT CLUB

GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE

Rules and By Laws Review
SoPYC_logo
In line with good governance practice, the Management Committee have requested that the Governance Committee review the South of Perth Yacht Club’s Rules and By Laws to ensure that they are fit for purpose whilst remaining compliant with the Associations Incorporation Act.

The current set of Rules and ByLaws were adopted in May 2019 response to the root and branch overhaul of the Associations Incorporation Act which was introduced in July 2016. Since then, there have been a number of clauses identified as being ambiguous and/or open to interpretation, as well as a number of omissions, together with various drafting inconsistencies.

As the Rules and By Laws are the principal governance documents of the Club, by providing the foundation for its existence and operation, member input into this review is very important.
To that end, the Governance Committee is seeking your views and input on changes that you believe could be incorporated into these documents.

This can be done by emailing comments and/or suggestions to governance@sopyc.com.au or by contacting the Chair of the Governance Committee, Phillip Draber, in person or on 0418 293 051.

Following the review, any proposed changes to the Rules and By Laws recommended by the Governance Committee and if they are considered appropriate by the Management Committee, they will be presented to members for approval at a general meeting.

We look forward to your suggestions and ideas.

Phillip Draber
Chair, Governance Committee.

Staff Update

I know this has been high on the rumour mill and car park chatter, but until we had all the ducks in a row it was only that.

Its only been in the last few hours we have finalised the employment contracts for both the General Manager position and the Sailing Administrator.

I would like to mention fairly new member Mike Irving, founder and coach of Advanced Business Abilities Specialists Performance Coaching and Self-Development. Mike very generously reduced his rate for the Club.

The process was to draft a job advert and load this onto Seek. This sounds like an easy task, but to have a professional advert with the right wording and methodology to only attract good personal is a bit of an art. Once we had a shortlist, Mike’s staff interviewed the candidates via telephone and once they ticked most of the boxes, they were invited to take a specialised behavioral and abilities test. The results assessed candidates and the most appropriate candidates were interviewed. This reduced the interview time with surprising results. So, a big thanks to Mike and his team.

It now gives me the pleasure to announce we have employed Keith McLuckie as the General Manager of South of Perth Yacht Club.

Keith has come from a banking background and in the interview, he explained that he had worked in the major banks in the early part of his career, moving to independent banking industry until now. Independent banking is made up of small shareholders run with Volunteer board much the same as Clubs. In General, he is also policy and procedure driven, not a great boating background but will enjoy a beer.
Keith will join us on Monday 11th of October 2021 and he is eager to meet the membership so keep an eye out.

I guess this is secondhand knowledge, as you will already know our Sailing Administrator, Scott Nunn, has resigned and will be finishing up on Wednesday 6th October 2021. Scott has taken up the Administrators job at Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club. Thank you and all the best in your new role.

This of course left a pretty big hole in the OWG, but as they say as one door closes another opens, and low and behold a call from a past employee. I am pleased to advise that Sharon Skinner will be starting as Sailing Administrator on the 18th of October 2021. We will have a bit of filling in to do with results over the next couple of weeks so bear with us as the RO’s and starters will be filing in.

Thanks.

John Midolo
Acting General Manager
