Dear Members and Friends,
Maurice’s Interests were many, one of them sailing in 1990. This became a passion and led to the purchase of his first boat in 1992, a space sailor 22 called Marsudo. It was moored near the Raffles Hotel for several years and eventually succumbed to the friendly sea birds. Seeking refuge, he joined South of Perth Yacht Club in February 1996, moving the boat into a pen to continue his love of sailing. Maurice, being Maurice, needed a bigger boat and moved to a Sprit 28 named Beagle. He enjoyed sailing with the Club and single handed on occasions, he also enjoyed just sitting on his boat whiling away the hours.

Maurice became actively involved in the Clubs committee structure very soon after joining. He started with the Membership portfolio moving through the ranks and completing two years as Commodore 2005 through to 2007. Maurice was a quiet achiever and over the years pushed ahead supporting the Sailing and Power Sections of the club. I think some members referred to him as the peace maker.

There was another side to Maurice when he first was confronted with a microphone, he stalled but after a bit of encouragement he flourished. There were a few times the microphone led him into trouble but that’s another story. I think his time as presenter at
“Chase the Ace” were his best, earning him the coveted Golden Microphone.

As I have said Maurice was a quiet achiever and formed many lifetime friends at the Club, both he and Margaret enjoyed many social events and were involved in the club’s activities.

Past Commodore and vice Patron Maurice Cooper passed away on Sunday 18th July after battling illness for some time. He is survived by his wife Margaret and daughters Susan and Donna and will be missed by many members and friends made throughout his life mucking around in boats.

Maurice’s funeral will be held at South of Perth Yacht Club, on Tuesday 27th July 10 am.

Kind Regards,
South of Perth Yacht Club
