Dear reader
From the Wheelhouse - November 2020

Governance

We keep on talking about the strategic plan with the document coming to management last month. After a lot of debate, we have sent it back to a sub committee to tidy up some of the KPI’s. We hope this will be ready for the November meeting.

We are still dealing with a few legal matters. We were under the impression this would be a simple process that management could finalise quickly however, this turning into a lengthy process. The committee is very much aware of the cost to the general membership and are seeking a speedy conclusion.

To update members of progress - the Policy committee made a presentation to the committee outlining a proposed policy template and guidelines. The plan is to send current policies to the relevant department heads, portfolio chairpersons and sections for checking and updating before formatting them on the new templates. This all sounds confusing but hopefully at the end of this we will not need to reinvent the wheel every time a committee changes!

Planning

As members may be aware, our riverbed lease is up for renewal in June, 2027. With a new lease we are expecting the riverbed rent to be considerably more that we have been accustomed to. We are now revisiting proposal from 2009 to construct more pens to offset some of the anticipated fee increases. There are two proposals we are looking at. One is to extend our lease out to the East. This would mean swapping some of our mooring area. The other is to build Jetty 8 within our present lease - early days yet.

The committee is also looking at the front gate entrance. There are a few hurdles to overcome, namely our utilities. We have a management order pending as the land swap agreement from the western hardstand parklet which extends our existing boundary out to roughly the riverside foot paths. Unfortunately, all the services are in the middle of this area. We are considering realigning our entrance and exit roads to go around these as the cost to shift the utilities are enormous. This could also fit in with our security upgrade.

Finance

This is the first time in a long time we have seen the Treasurer in a good mood reporting we have had a favourable month. Unfortunately, we do not qualify for Job Keeper in the second round. Functions are looking positive in the current environment; which is good as it will control the ability to meet our future capital expenditure budget.

We are still struggling with 90 day debtors. We know that there are some of our members struggling through Covid19 so the Treasurer has extended an olive branch to these members to enter into payment plans. So, if you fall in this category please contact the office to save any further embarrassment about your subscriptions and pen fees.

Works

The chair reported the Centreboard Club renovations were on target with the completion in the third week in November. This will be welcomed by the off the beach sailors.

We have had a structural inspection on the No1 jetty (fuelling Jetty) as part of the replacement of the wave screens project which is due to start in mid January 2021. The report is expected to be tabled at the next management meeting.

The kitchen extension approvals are starting to roll in so hopefully we will see the approval granted early in the new year.

Pens and moorings

With the increase of requests for hardstand tenders (Ribs) the committee outlined a proposal to allow floating docks to be extended out along the southern side of jetty 7. This was approved by management. There are a couple of parameters; vessels up to 9.5m including outboards in the raised position, will be allowed and the extent will only be as far out as the piled pens.

Functions

The 75th celebrations are in full swing and the committee has several member-based events coming up.

The newly formed Archive Section has collected an astonishing amount of memorabilia from past and present members. As this is being collated, we are finding all kinds of fascinating articles that will interest most of us.

Training and Development

We are starting to see growth from all the hard work being put in by our coach and committee with good retention rate of junior members from the various courses. Once again, this is still early days but is showing promising results.

Final repairs have been done on the “Bakewell 8’s” and this will boost the training programme.

Security

As modern technology improves, we find ourselves in world of constant change. The committee has relooked at how we communicate with the various camera options. The original advice was with Wi-Fi, but now there is a problem with the amount of data necessary to run the system and the ongoing costs. The thinking is to use fibre optic cable as this is more expensive in the initial stages, but once in place a cost saving will be had.

On a different note, in my travels to the various opening days of kindred clubs, Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club have a tradition on their Opening Day with the running of the “Cannon Ball” trophy race. I have watched this event over the last couple of years with interest. Chatting with the Commodore it seemed some years ago they introduced “St Ayles” Rowing Skiffs to the club to encourage inter section comradery. This seems to have had a marked effect and the competition grew with the Opening Day battle taken very seriously. After a couple of beers and chatting with some of the rowers, the thought of interclub regattas loomed. The obvious question was: where do you acquire the skiffs from? Apparently, they come from South Australia in a plywood flat pack and you build your own. I floated this at management and from the comments around the table, this could fit in the strategic plan as this encourages section interaction, encourages new members, and provides inter club challenges. There was keen interest from other Commodores from kindred clubs. I will explore the costs and report back to management. This could be an interesting challenge for the Bosuns Club.

I believe I have covered most of the highlights from the meeting - thank you once again for your interest.

Cheers,

John
