COFFEE POINTERS

What's on this week: 17 November 2020
During the last few weeks, and in some cases a little longer, we have been recruiting staff to fill new roles at the club and replace staff who have departed.
The Management Committee have approved the establishment of a Facilities Superintendent who will be supported by a Facilities Administrator. Kerry Culshaw joined us yesterday as Facilities Superintendent. Kerry has a strong background in asset management, asset management software and project management. Her new role will be to establish asset management systems, oversee tenders and projects and co-ordinate the day to day maintenance required by a club of our size, supported by the club bosuns. Jess Oakley, is the Facilities Administrator and will continue administering Pens and Moorings and supporting the committee. Her role will be expanded to travel lift bookings and support for Kerry Culshaw in the asset arena.
Romina Schiavi has joined SoPYC as Digital Media, Marketing and Sponsorship Officer taking the role (with some changes in emphasis) that Linda MacKillikan held. Romina has a background in journalism and digital marketing. She and her husband are proud owners of Starfire of Perth, a well-known WA yacht. She is also a keen dragon boat paddler. Today is her first issue of Coffee Pointers.
Jennifer Davies is taking on the Club Secretary role on a part-time basis and relinquishing her committee secretary roles after December. We are sourcing replacement secretaries for these committees.
In the Food and Beverage section, I am sorry to advise that after 12 years in the role, Fiona Whife has resigned to take on a role in the family business. Fiona has dedicated herself to the success of the food and beverage activities of the club and I would like to thank her for her commitment to the clubs’ success. There have been changes to the duty managers and F&B staff over the last few weeks too. Lee Promfert and Amy Dans have joined us as Duty Managers. We have commenced the search for a Food and Beverage Manager and we are some way down the track.
Please make yourself known to our new staff when next in the club.
We are looking forward to the arrival of the Greenbatch container deposit bins which will be very soon.
The long-awaited training centre (Centreboard Club House) toilet and shower refurbishment is about to be completed. We are hopeful that members will be able to "christen" the new facilities this Sunday.

South of Perth Yacht Club Awarded International Environmental Accreditation
The South of Perth Yacht Club has achieved accreditation under the International Clean Marina Program along with the additional recognition of it being a Fish Friendly Marina.
Situated on the beautiful Swan River, the marina was successful in the rigorous, independent assessment process which audits a 103-point checklist. The Clean Marina Program and assessment criteria was developed by industry and government specialists in Australia. The audit includes inspections of mechanical activities, boat maintenance and storage, fueling, facility and waste management, workshop, risk management and emergency planning and boater education. A detailed written report is provided to the Marina following the site audit.
“The South of Perth Yacht Club has long been a wonderful site that has always had proactive environmental initiatives in place so it is great to accredit as a Clean Marina” said Suzanne Davies, CEO of the Marina Industries Association which administers the program.
The Fish Friendly accreditation is an addition to the Clean Marina accreditation, which assesses advanced elements of environmental planning and management, such as identifying opportunities to incorporate fish friendly structures into the marina to encourage marina life and the education of marina visitors on local fish species.
When advised of the successful accreditation, David Harries, General Manager of South of Perth Yacht Club commented, “South of Perth Yacht Club has been conscientious about its marine environment obligations due to its proximity on the Swan and Canning Rivers and is proud of our technological improvements and preventing noxious run-off from the slipway and hardstand entering the river waters. Our accreditation as a Clean Marina and Fish Friendly Marina is a natural progression of our efforts to constantly improve our environment for members and the community of Perth.”
WA based MIA Director, Stuart Walton presented the Clean Marina flag to the newly accredited Club at their weekly Twilight Sailing Meet to Commodore John Midolo.
MIA President Andrew Chapman praised club management noting, “This significant achievement by such a high-profile Perth club is important for the industry and the club as it demonstrates environmental leadership to the wider community. We now have Clean Marinas and Fish Friendly accredited marinas in Australia, Asia and the UAE. These marinas are setting the benchmark for environmental leadership and it is great to see”.

Message from the Archive Research Team
We are appealing to members to look through old photo albums, boxes in the back of cupboards and out in the garage to help create an archive for the Club marking the 75-year celebrations. If you find anything you think the team might like to see please contact the Archive Research Team, Bernie Kaaks, Rick Steuart and Amanda Watson. The era we are looking into specifically at this stage is the new Club 1970 – 1980. If members have any old Year Books, Soundings or newsletters pre 2000 we would love to hear from you.

Legends Gather at Applecross
Alan Tough OAM, a stalwart and past president of the S80 class association who passed away in November 2016, is remembered in an annual commemorative S80 Legends Day Race. S80 Association members volunteer their boats to skippers who previously made an impact in the class. Initially held at South of Perth Yacht Club on Wednesday 7th December 2016, the event generated so much goodwill that it was decided to repeat it annually, alternating between Royal Perth and South of Perth Yacht clubs.
The Legends’ Day Race now draws together some of the State’s top names in the sport from yesteryear with a commemorative luncheon followed by a race against today’s best.
Alan Tough’s sister Diane Airey has graciously presented trophies to the winner each year on behalf of the family.
This year an invitation has gone out to past sailors in the class to gather in time to watch the finish of this year’s race. Former State and National S80 champion John Holder issued an open invitation to all those sailors who once sailed in the S80 class, but who now find themselves unable to sail due to their advancing years, to gather at the South of Perth Yacht Club at about 3:30pm on Wednesday 25th November to watch the finish and join in the celebrations afterwards.
“I’ve spoken to a lot of the older sailors,” John Holder said this week. “The level of enthusiasm to attend this event and enjoy the company of mates who shared their racing in the class has been very encouraging and I’m expecting a good turnout.”

The more observant club member may be questioning Andrew’s use of various legal stimulants in deciding how to best express the concept of “running free” which recently came to adorn the “rear” of the boat that “bares” that name.
Yes, the puns and poor spelling are intended and no apology is given except whatever is required to protect the editor. Flying Fifteens are not a feature in the works of Dickens, Tolstoy or Hemingway so we have to make do with literary hacks much further down the food chain.
Back to the sailing and Andrew and Selina enjoyed the close racing of Sunday and had Running Free in an enviable position around the top mark on a couple of occasions. Nick and Brad (Ineffable) were in the lead for most of the day and particularly when it mattered with Flashpoint (Rookie and Mike or Paul) second all day.
Thanks to our very patient Race Officer who persisted with the P flag for all the starts of race 2 despite the overly enthusiastic fleet.
