Pens & Moorings Update
Preventing Electric Shock at the Dock
Most of you with vessels in the Marina use the Club’s shore power at some time. The Club has taken the supply of electricity very seriously due to the inherent risks around water. Last year we implemented a slight change in our policy which saw 100% take up on tagged and tested shore power leads. This was fantastic and I applaud all of you for doing this.
|
However there still poses some very real risks when being around electricity and water. This article supplied by Colin Delane highlights the need to be ever vigilant when dealing with electricity and also to be very diligent when working around your vessel.
|
Here are a couple of key things to remember when combining water and electricity:
|
- When you go boating, switch off the AC power breakers onboard and at the shore power pedestal and unplug the power cord.
- Move your boat at least 150 m from any marina before entering the water to perform maintenance or to scrub the bottom. In freshwater, the power gradient can extend as much as 50 m from the fault.
- If the dock is used by swimmers, install only low voltage lighting and no power outlets.
- Never use 240 volt power tools from a tender or float, or even in a way where wet conditions can create a ground through you. Using power tools near freshwater or saltwater can be lethal. The seawater becomes an excellent coupler from the sailor to ground, and wet hands make a good connection to the power tool.
- Always use Residual Current Device (RCD) protection. If there’s none in the circuit, install a RCD pigtail.
- If you must swim in a saltwater marina, unplug yours and nearby boats and turn off pedestal breakers and battery switches. This should eliminate the
remote risk of a severe fault.

Message from the Archive Research Team
|
We are appealing to members to look through old photo albums, boxes in the back of cupboards and out in the garage to help create an archive for the Club marking the 75-year celebrations. If you find anything you think the team might like to see please contact the Archive Research Team, Bernie Kaaks, Rick Steuart and Amanda Watson. The era we are looking into specifically at this stage is the new Club 1960 – 1970. If members have any old Year Books, Soundings or newsletters pre 2000 we would love to hear from you.

Little Skippers Powerboat Training Event Power Section Junior Training Regatta: “Little Skippers” Early Sunday morning, as dinghies and tenders lined the beach, 31 enthusiastic 11-14 year old participants with parents, volunteers and members from Sea Rescue and WA Water Police, assembled as the aroma of the coffee from the van wafted across the lawns, there was excited anticipation for what …

The shifty breeze of Sunday had everyone thinking they had picked the right way until, 5 minutes later, they were proved wrong . It was a sea breeze fighting against a gradient breeze and, once you figured that out, your appearance towards the front of the fleet was assured. Those to feature were Nick and Brad (Ineffable), Greg and Mike (The Answer), John and Matt (Fast Lane 4).
|
A significant milestone in the consistency results with Simon and Jen Stone winning both races and Jen being awarded the champagne for outstanding patience under fire.

Happy birthday (again) to Vice Commodore Cook.
