Radio Sailing at SoPYC

Friday 25 May at 2:00pm

A ‘try out’ invitation regatta is to be held at the club for Radio Sailors on Friday the 25th May.

To that end, the Perth RSC has agreed to transfer its Thursday (24th May) program to Friday the 25th May (commencing at 2:00pm) to the club. The nearby Wanderers RC club through Mark Popham has been invited as well, and Wanderers may be joining us on the day.

PRSC has agreed to supply marker buoys and a starting box, leaving SoPYC to provide a rib or poly boat for mark laying and retrieval of any ‘runaway’ boats.

Interestingly, this will not be the first time that radio yachts have been sailed at SoPYC. In the early 2000’s, a National Championship at SoPYC was held. The regatta was held in early January, and those who attended still talk about the jellyfish! There were days when the sailing was terrific, and days when it was a disaster. Provided there is a good understanding of the movement of the jelly’s, SoPYC could be a good venue.

I see the introduction of Radio Sailing to the club as another pathway through which interest in sailing can be promoted. As a matter of interest, I took part in a school demonstration of Radio Sailing, where students were given the controls of the yachts. A lasting comment was that this ‘was a video game on water’. I believe use of radio yachts at school training sessions would greatly enrich students’ sailing experience. The club would do well to include them in sail training sessions.

Looking forward to seeing you on the 25th.
