What's on this week: 02 November 2020
As a club we are proud of the recognition we have for our environmental recycling systems which are amongst the most advanced in the country. I am pleased to inform members that after a recent audit by the Marina Industries Association, SoPYC has been accredited as an International Clean Marina and Fish Friendly Marina. This accreditation supports the efforts everyone has been making in improving our environmental footprint. The Management Committee resolved last week to enter into a MOU with the Hellenic Environmental Association HELMEPA which aspires to clean oceans. Our thanks to Bernie Anson for his introduction. There will shortly be an exchange of burgees between HELMEPA and SoPYC.
In addition to these initiatives, we have pledged to eradicate single use plastics from our site and this starts at straws and moves toward plastic wrapping which encase parts for motors and hard shell plastics for boat fittings. So, shortly, we will be communicating with contractors about removing their plastic from the premises when they have completed the job, or better still, bringing in parts and equipment that has had the plastic removed before entering the club. These changes will need the support and action of club members who engage approved licensed contractors for boat maintenance to familiarise contractors with the changes as we introduce them.
Green Batch Container Deposit Bins will shortly been seen around the club for the collection of receptacles under the new container deposit scheme introduced by the State Government in October. We have joined the Rotary Club of Melville in introducing Green Batch collection bins and we will share the proceeds of the revenue generated from the collection of receptacles that are part of the container deposit scheme.

Pens & Moorings Update
Insurance Cover When Racing
After an accident between vessels, and some close calls, during the first few weeks of the sailing season the club would like to remind members of the importance of adequate insurance cover for your vessel. Did you know that you need to specify you will be racing in order to be covered for any accidents that occur during a race? Most insurance providers don’t cover you for accidents when racing and so please check your policy to make sure you have cover for sail boats when racing.

Message from the Archive Research Team
We are appealing to members to look through old photo albums, boxes in the back of cupboards and out in the garage to help create an archive for the Club marking the 75-year celebrations. If you find anything you think the team might like to see please contact the Archive Research Team, Bernie Kaaks, Rick Steuart and Amanda Watson. The era we are looking into specifically at this stage is the new Club 1960 – 1970. If members have any old Year Books, Soundings or newsletters pre 2000 we would love to hear from you.

Wet and cold are not normally part of the vernacular when commentating on sailing in Perth during November but, throw in a brisk north-easterly and that was Sunday afternoon. Well done to those hardy souls who carried the flag and thanks to all the on water officials for setting and staying the course. Full results can be found in the usual place and expect to see the Jerwood / Sheridan names towards the front in most races.

John Hassen had Andrew on board for the first time and managed to explain how to lean on a Flying Fifteen without actually giving a demonstration!!

Club Championship races next weekend so a bigger fleet is expected.
