What's on this week: 27 October 2020
Summer is on its way. Daily temperatures are on the rise and after an almost idyllic weekend, weatherwise, it was great to see many people using their boats participating in regattas, club sailing and recreational pursuits such as our traditional Rotto weekends on the return. Those of us lucky to be on the water on Sunday were able to see boats anchored at Carnac Island, Parker Point and on moorings in Thompsons Bay. Hopefully, the boom of the Duyfken canon signalling farewell to Perth and WA waters didn’t disturb Sunday lunches….
Summer also heralds in the Goolugatup Sailing Carnival which will be hosted by SoPYC in place of the Australian Youth Championships from 4th January until 14th January 2021. The organising committee headed by Stephen Grover, Rear Commodore Regatta, is a huge undertaking and the committee will be needing assistance at a number of levels. Volunteers will be needed for many tasks and if you have the time to spare over these days, Stephen will be pleased to hear from you. Please let Scott in the On Water Group know of your interest. If you can’t offer time, perhaps you might be able to support the regatta via a sponsorship? There are a range of sponsorships available to support the regatta ranging from $2500 (Gold), $1500 (Silver) and $500 (Bronze). Stephen will be pleased to provide more information about the event which is for off the beach, keel and power boats. He’ll also outline sponsorship support that members can provide. Maree at reception will help you contact him.

Pens & Moorings Update
Those of you with vessels in the Club that have engines both big and small know that the Club has a mandatory requirement that your vessel meets our Marina Safety Compliance. This is required for your vessel to be safely berthed either in a land pen or a water pen at our club.
That’s a good question. Best answered by the two links to YouTube clips that clearly shows what could happen to either your vessel or someone’s vessel alongside you
We are all members of our Club because we love our boats. So, first step is to get them checked to ensure there is no risk to ourselves or our fellow vessel owners.
You might be interested in the information provided below. While the article is from a few years back, the content is still very relevant today. Its seriously worth the read.
We have over one hundred (100) boats currently within the club grounds both within the marina and the land pen storage area who do not have marina safety compliance, or are overdue their three-year health check-up (re-compliance). The re-compliance is also very important as already we have found quite a few boats with corroded earth straps and also many with either discharged or empty fire extinguishers. Not Good.
The re-compliance does not cost you anything but a little time. Its really easy to do now. Just log into the Club website and go to the “Boat Facilities” tab. The self-audit is quick and simple and, once completed, submit the form and call one of the compliance officers listed on the web site to have the vessel checked.
Please help us keep the Club safe and get yours done as soon as possible?

Message from the Archive Research Team
We are appealing to members to look through old photo albums, boxes in the back of cupboards and out in the garage to help create an archive for the Club marking the 75-year celebrations. If you find anything you think the team might like to see please contact the Archive Research Team, Bernie Kaaks, Rick Steuart and Amanda Watson. The era we are looking into specifically at this stage is the new Club 1960 – 1970. If members have any old Year Books, Soundings or newsletters pre 2000 we would love to hear from you.

The club’s fully staffed and well equipped “re-hydration station” was a welcome sight to the sailors and officials who endured the first 2 races in very light and warm conditions with a few seeking a shady tree by mid-afternoon. Those who stayed for the third race were rewarded with a much cooler twitchy westerly and some great racing. Greg and Mike had all “The Answers” (sorry) to be fastest in each race.
Morton made a cameo due to Kristine’s absence on board Faffin and Jen was doing all the hard work on board Fly in the Ointment while Greg swans around Port Hedland.
Normal racing continues next week (Consistency series ). Start time 1325 hours.
Below: Plenty of dacron and not much breeze early on Sunday afternoon.
