With the closure of the WA border boat brokers are reporting that sales have gone through the roof. We have seen an increase in boat turnover and new ownership also. If you have a vessel on the market or you are contemplating a change of boat, please come and speak to admin staff about the process as far as the club’s policies and procedures are concerned before embarking on selling your boat and the new owner wanting a pen at the club.. This will save some embarrassment and frustration through what can be an anxious process. Unfortunately, some members have had bad experiences in recent months by relying on advice or information from brokers that is contradictory to club policies and procedures. So, please, please speak to us first to avoid the upset of hearing from SoPYC there is a problem or requirement not fulfilled just as the contract of sale has been signed or you are waiting for settlement, that there is a glitch or problem in the process. Jess Oakley can be reached via secretary@sopyc.com.au or on 9364 5844 and will be happy to explain the Pens and Moorings procedures and processes that need to be fulfilled for a boat that the new owners need a pen for at the club.

Its been a few months since we last put some information up in Soundings and so I thought we should give you an update.
Pen Application/Compliance Forms:
These are now up on the web site inside the members portal. You will find it under the tab “Boat Facilities”. The forms are all very self-explanatory and, provided you follow the instructions, you will have no problem completing them as many new members have already. Please also note that if you don’t complete the forms then nothing will happen with them and you will be waiting a very long time for a pen. Old insurance and using the abbreviation TBA are not considered as being acceptable.
It is really pleasing to see the number of vessels who are getting their three (3) yearly compliance done. I know most of you will think “why” when nothing has changed, however we have already found many vessels where corrosion has caused the earth strap to no longer work and we have had quite a few with discharged fire extinguishers. As you are no doubt aware the Marina Safety Compliance is not just about keeping your boat safe, but is also about keeping the other members boats safe.
The Pens and Moorings committee wishes to say a big thank you to all of the members in water pens. Every vessel with the exception of 2 has had their cables successfully tested and tagged by our club electrician. This is a fantastic outcome as it means that minimising the risk of electrical damage to the members and the Club is good for all. Well Done!!

If you were looking for a relaxing sail, Sunday may not have been for you. The attrition rate was fairly high with 15 boats early in the day and only half that amount by the end of race 2. Nick and Brad won both races, Greg and Ian (filling in for Mike) second in both and Rookie and Paul third in both.
Plonky’s birthday celebration didn’t go quite to the script with some “navigational issues” in the first race and then a long pause to wash the windex in the second race. Thankfully, all returned safely albeit with some emotional and physical bruising.
Thanks also to Jen for pushing the crane buttons and making retrieval easier after a tough day.
Below: Happier times for Tim and Plonky on board 'Follow Us'.

75th Anniversary Navigators ToD Race
October 11th was the inaugural Navigators ToD Race. It is the first time a race of this race format has been conducted Offshore in WA.
The Navigators ToD race is a bit like a choose your own adventure or choose your own race. It was a race designed for all yachts who meet Cat 4 Safety to come out and have a go at Offshore racing. The competitors were given a set of legs to choose from with the aim of covering the greatest distance within the time limit of six hours. The challenge of this is understanding your yacht, weather conditions of the day and your crew’s capabilities. Each participants course needed to be submitted before the start. Our cut off was Saturday 1700hrs.
Nine yachts competed in the event. Four were SoPYC yachts
After the start all yachts rounded the Day buoy and Burnell, then each went their own way to cover their course without going over time. The competitors were spread from as far north as Sorrento marker to south as Calista G (into Cockburn Sound). Finish was at South Mole.
The day started in ideal sailing conditions with the wind and sea state increasing throughout the day.
It is a difficult race to sail for many reasons. Quite often you cannot see any other yacht. A comment was It was just like a long distance offshore race. You couldn’t see your competitors.
Another interesting facet to the race is you have no idea how you are doing against other yachts.
Considered a successful race as afterwards, the bar was a buzz with all boats discussing tactics, courses and challenges. The feed back has been mostly positive with suggestions for improvement for the next Navigators ToD race.
Thank to Todd Walsh for suggesting and then organising the race. Thank you to all our volunteers from all clubs and thankyou to FSC for their hospitality.

Power Section Presentation Night
"The 2020 Coffee Point Marine Season wrapped up last Saturday evening with a casual cocktail party event to end the abbreviated 59th time trail season at the Club.
Our outgoing Power Captain, Mark Hayman, welcomed aboard the Sections new Captain, David Markham, and new Vice Captain, Doug Smith, as they officially took over thier new positions on the evening.
A full Wardroom of VIPS and guests attended the evening, which with the change of format from the traditional Presentation Night, was well received and provided for a very social evening, with reports of some members playing on until the very early hours of the morning.
