What's on this week: 29 September 2020

Dear reader,
Next Sunday is the Summer Opening Day for the Club. In 2020, we have set this as the start of the commemoration of the 75th year since the club was established after a public meeting on 18th December, 1945. The Anniversary Committee has put a great deal of effort into getting ready for the day and has a programme of events planned over the next twelve months. The activities include setting up formal archival volunteers with a budget and support from present and past members and the community of South Perth. The City of South Perth have been very supportive of the club particularly their Local History Librarian Anthony Styan who has been very generous with his time. The volunteer archivists met with long-standing members last Saturday and started the process of recording their collective memories. There have been many offers of assistance, donations of historical material and material that will be on loan to the club. Should you have any material, photos, memorabilia, old trophies and the like, the archivists would love to speak to you to gather as much of our history as South Perth Yacht Club and South of Perth Yacht Club as they can. If you can assist, please contact the office and we will put you in touch with the archivists.

_MG_8004 TROY
Congratulations to Rear Commodore Troy Dalglish, who last week was recognised by his peers with the award of Motor Yacht Person of the Year at the Australian Sailing Awards.
It was a fitting reward for a person who spent two years at the helm of YWA’s Cruising and Power Yacht Committee, starting that organisation’s difficult transition from a State body sub-committee into an association.

At the same time, teaming up with his navigator Dee Kelly, Troy won the State Championship in time trials. In Club competition, he was forced to hand his 400 numbers to Steve Wall after a fascinating and extremely competitive 2019 season. Management and the Power Yacht Committee as Training Officer and running an annual training day aimed at introducing newcomers to the sport. Troy’s training sessions have included many of the new skippers joining the sport from Royal Perth Yacht Club, bringing greater participation to the sport with the rejuvenation of time trialling activity at that Club.

With a wealth of experience as both a competitor and administrator, Troy will be a welcome asset to the Club as a Rear Commodore.

On behalf of all our Club, we thank Troy for his ongoing contribution and congratulate him on being awarded the Motor Yacht Person of the Year for 2020.
Ben
Ben continues to excel in coaching Laser sailors. From his daily Laser coaching with Fremantle Sailing Club, South of Perth Yacht Club, WAIS and WASS to taking our young National sailors to World Championship events. He is proactive in helping sailors achieve their best with regular phone calls and emails to sailors to discuss sailing issues, areas to improve and general encouragement to keep them motivated and moving forward.
Michael Compton
Michael has consecutively won the Laser Radial Youth World Championships in his age category, under 16 in 2018 and under 17 in 2019. He has also achieved his second, consecutive win at the National Championships. Michael has shown a high level of talent through his transition from youth. He has successfully transferred his achievements in the 4.7 to the Radial. He is a hard worker and committed to his sailing. He is a valuable Club member who adds a great level of competition to the training group.
