What's on this week: 22 September 2020

Dear reader,
Last week we invited members to guess to the nearest tonne how much waste the Club generates in one year. It may come as a surprise that we generate 235 tonnes of rubbish annually. This is made up of general waste, glass, comingled and cardboard. We have not included fluids in this data. Some of this waste is brought in and is made up of such items as tyres, carpet, rusting outdoor furniture and unwanted household goods that can’t be fitted into home bins. Apart from becoming responsible controllers of the waste we generate, more diligent disposal of the types of rubbish and the way in which we dispose of rubbish is something we are aiming for so we can reduce the cost of waste collection. For example, if cardboard boxes are flattened when placed in bins, we can dispose of up to 300 cardboard boxes in a bin rather than 30 unflattened boxes. What does this mean, it means less bin collections per month, therefore less cost; whereas unflattened boxes mean more collections and greater cost. Effectively, we are paying the waste contractor to take away air. Another picture that can be painted, is that our 235 tonnes equates to 2912m3 of rubbish. A 6 x 4 trailer filled to 1.0m high holds 2.2m3 . Were we to use a standard 6 x 4 trailer to remove rubbish, we would need to make 1323 trips to the local council tip. Contaminated waste (wet waste such as food scraps put into recycling bins) also costs more money. Our appeal to all members is please dispose of your rubbish off boats in the correct bins and flatten cardboard as a start…. So, back to the question and the closest guess, the winner is Bruce Uren who estimated 185 tonnes! Congratulations Bruce, you have won a bottle of red and a bottle of white. Please contact David Harries to collect your prize. Thankyou everyone for you guesses.
