Dear Members,
The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) is warning members of the public to avoid swimming in areas of the Swan River due to elevated levels of harmful bacteria being detected over the past fortnight. Swimming (of humans and pets) around drains or in discoloured or smelly water is not advised following recent high rainfall events. See the following link for DoH’s media release https://ww2.health.wa.gov.au/Media-releases/2021/Warning-to-avoid-swimming-and-fishing-in-parts-of-Avon-and-Swan-Rivers.

This warning has been issued as a result of increased flows from the Avon River that may have washed nutrients, organic matter and other pollutants into the Swan River. The flood flows have contributed to some fish kills and have caused some visible surface foaming and discolouration around the Swan River.

DBCA is continuing to monitor the situation, however information from members of the public is also welcome. Anyone who sees dead or sluggish fish, crabs or prawns in the Swan Canning Riverpark are asked to report this to FishWatch on 1800 815 507. The public is also advised to not collect dead fish and to prevent their dogs from consuming dead fish.

Kind Regards,
South of Perth Yacht Club
