Keeping a Lookout!
SoPYC is always looking for ways to improve its sailing and power competitions in all aspects including skill, knowledge, camaraderie and most importantly, safety.
It is this last aspect that needs to be very much “Front of Mind” as a skipper is responsible for protecting and ensuring the safety of crew, fellow competitors and of course, other users of the shared water space.
Unfortunately, there have been a number of incidents on the water this season (and others!) involving yachts colliding with other yachts and a most disturbing recent incident where a person in the water was not seen by anybody on the yacht. This incident could have resulted in serious injury but for the intercedence of a coach rib in between the yacht and the person in the water.
Keeping a lookout is the responsibility of ALL on board, no matter how inexperienced. Be observant and keep skippers and crew informed of the proximity of other craft or people and the potential for accident or collision. The Collisions at Sea Regulations require this but common sense (and self-preservation) should be the motivator for all concerned to ensure a safe and enjoyable days sailing.
Therefore, on behalf of the club, may I remind competitors of the need for vigilance when you leave the jetty so you can enjoy your recreation...Sailing!

Limiting Access to Off the Beach Rigging Lawns
Due to severe undermining of the ground beneath the new concrete pathway leading to the Centreboard Clubhouse access to the lawn areas is restricted to boat trailers and light cars. Unfortunately, irrigation pipes are being damaged by the weight of heavy vehicles driving across the lawn area.
Heavy vehicles driving over the lawns is leading to the PVC pipes being cracked and water being pumped into the ground beneath the lawn areas. Due to the sandy soil, it is difficult to trace the damaged pipes leading to excessive water loss and undermining of the surrounding ground.

Staff Changes - Facilities Administrator – Jess Oakley
Unfortunately, Jess Oakley who looks after the pens and moorings Committee has resigned from the role. Although she is working from home presently, Jess’ last working day will be Friday 26th March. Jess has accepted a part time role with another marina which will enable Jess to return to study later this year. On behalf of the Management Committee I would like to pass on our good wishes for her future and thank Jess for her loyalty and support of SoPYC while she filled the role. She will be missed by her colleagues and members alike.

Cockburn Power Boat Club Pirate Raid on SoPYC
With smoke billowing, bagpipes being played confidently by our own pirate Greg Power, our SoPYC pirates were ready to defend our lands and the coveted Pirate Chest full of booty!
The fierce, marauding invaders from Cockburn Power Boat Club (CPBC) launched a two pronged ferocious attack from sea and land last Saturday 20 March.
With swords and cutlasses glinting in the sun and water pistols drawn, all pirates including lots of kids, teenagers and adults, waded into the frenzied fray. With raging determination, the pirates from over the seas battled us fiercely at our Fort for the Pirate Chest! After half an hour of very enthusiastic yelling, slashing and swashbuckling action which would make the best pirates in our history envious, the CPBC became the victors in capturing the Pirate Chest from SoPYC!
The young lads and lassies then had to hunt for the Treasure Chest key. Ella Shields with some enthusiastic help from her other pirate friends found the key which led to the opening of the Pirate Chest with all its beautiful treasure of gold coins and jewels. Tales of the fights, valour and victory were heard throughout the night being retold over and over, eventually to become recorded in the annals of history of our respective clubs!
With the carnage over, CPBC exhilarated with their hard won victory and SoPYC gracious in defeat, were rewarded with a well-earned complimentary drink followed by many tipples thereafter! A fabulous salmagundi feast began which was then followed by live music provided by Bert Giancristofaro and his band for the evening with our pirates young and not so young seen dancing vigorously.
There were so many fabulous pirates and wenches, you could be forgiven for thinking that time had been turned back and the 160 of us were back in a pirates’ den full of fun, frivolity, great food, wine, buxom wenches and several Jack Sparrows!
With full bellies and lots of “rum”, the night finally came to an end. Many of the pirates returned home to suburbia while others staggered …. oops sauntered off to their ships.
On Sunday morning, SoPYC put on a great hearty cooked breakfast for those who were lucky enough to stay overnight on their ships or who chose to cross the land for a morning feast.
This great event will certainly be one of the highlights of our SoPYC events for 2021. It certainly would not have been the success it was but for all the planning, help and tireless work of the organising committee, the myriad of so many of our club volunteers and our very generous sponsors:
Wilson Marine (Chris Pearson and Toby Williams) Coffee Point Marine (Vice CPT Doug Smith)
Stottsure Financial Services (Paul Stott)
A really big super thank you to you all!
Thank you to the Pirate Raid Galley volunteers: Janelle Walford, Jan Culver, Maria Cook, Carol Harper, Victoria Hallam, Steve and Julie Leech, Tony and Julie Walther, Lana Kaaks, Fonny Ewart and RC Crowbar. A fantastic team effort!

SoPYC Hosts the Retro Fleet
Sunday afternoon was as close to a perfect sailing day as you could ask for. Warm weather without being too hot, a steady sea breeze that kept the fleet moving without being blustery enough to spill the wine – in other words a perfect day for the Retro fleet to pay us a visit.
What a group it brought together! Jon Sanders sailed Perie Banou (with crew), and legends of the sport included John Longley, Len Randell, RPYC past commodore John Fitzhardinge, sailmaker Steve Hartley and many others far to numerous to name individually.
It was Ralph Newton’s beautifully restored Eun-na-Mara which led the fleet home, but not after a torrid battle for the lead, which was not resolved until the final stages of the race.
In the end, it hardly mattered who won and lost, though the winners were lucky enough to take home a fine bottle of Jane Brook wine, thanks to Jane Brook sponsor David Atkinson.
You know you have had a good days sailing when a general recall is the worst thing that happened and the whole fleet awarded the port as a result. A couple of hardware malfunctions: David and Mary-Anne couldn’t keep the jib up while Jen and Adam couldn’t get the kite down. More homework before Easter. Three races, 17 boats, great conditions, sure beats sitting on the couch!
Club Championship heats 9 and 10 are next week and will serve as a warm up for the State Championships the following week in Geraldton.
A couple of weeks ago, Tim and Plonky (it was a joint effort) managed to store their lifting straps 4 or 5 metres below the floating finger jetty of the western hardstand. When dragging the anchor through the mud failed to retrieve them, the faithful Morton was called and is photographed contemplating his future having just been advised of a possible sewage spill up river!

Time trial competitors can nominate now for the 2021 season. The registration form which proved really simple and popular last year, has been updated for the current season.
After many weeks of changes, the calendar for 2021 is complete and the Red Book will be published on the Club website on Thursday.
You will need to be cautious with your records for courses this season. The
Deptartment of Transport has provided updated coordinates for all river marks which are now centralised on Pat Colquhoun’s Checkpoint program so all clubs will use the same database. What this means to you is that there may be minor differences in the distance (and therefore the timing) between marks where positions have been changed by DoT.

Pre-Season Cocktail Party
Let’s hope the gents have their tuxes cleaned and pressed and that the ladies have selected their very best cocktail dresses for the Pre-Season Cocktail Party (see poster) on the 9th April. New members with power boats – this is YOUR opportunity to meet and greet the time trialling community – the group which really knows how to have fun at the Club. Book now at Reception.
Sunday 11th April is our annual Training Day. It’s a combination of theory and on-water practice aimed specifically at new members who are new to time trialling. (By the way, there’s a very good YouTube video on the club website on how to Time Trial.)

Head Coach Report 23 March 2021
Big news for the week was our Women's Keelboat team who represented SoPYC in the State Keelboat Championship last weekend. The team was made up of 3 experienced sailors and 3 of our great junior sailor's parents. The team trained very hard over 5 weeks and I was impressed particularly with the spinnaker work which I thought was the best …
