As you may all be aware by now, we have a Facilities Superintendent (Kerry) employed to assist the Club with planned maintenance and asset management for the $20 million + in assets that we have in the Club.
You can help in making this role even better by registering anything that has broken or needs attention by taking a photo on your phone and emailing it with a small story to: maintenance@sopyc.com.au
You can do this 24/7 and the information will be collected and actioned on. It works because I have been using it for some months with excellent results.
It's that time of the year again when we need to get our shore power cables tested and tagged.
SoPYC Facility Holders (Members) are provided with one (1) annual complimentary Shore Power Lead test prior to the end of March each year for the lead connected to the AC Power supply if the lead is brought into Fire and Electrical Services located at Coffee Point Marine. The Shore Power Lead will be tested to AS/NZS 3760.
Most leads will expire at the end of March so now is the time to get them in. We will be extending the service from March to the 30th June for tagging. After this date, the service will not be complimentary for existing members. So, get your cable out and get it in to Doug after the 22nd of March for Test and Tag.

While you don’t need to advise the club that you are going to list your vessel, there are a couple of things to remember;
- You must not advertise your vessel with the pen. The pen belongs to the club and is not transferrable.
- Advise your broker that he must not tell his client that the pen can go with the boat.
- You must notify the club within 14 days of the sale that the vessel has been sold.
- If the purchaser would like the vessel to remain in the club then they must join the club and apply for a pen once their membership has been accepted. They may need to take the vessel away until a pen becomes available or, prior to purchase they can ring the club and see if there are pens available.
Purchasing your new vessel
It would be wise before purchasing your new vessel to check with the Club to see if the Club can accommodate your new vessel. If you purchase a bigger vessel and it won’t fit your pen, we might not be able to accommodate you. Here are a couple of things to remember;
- You will need to fill in new Pen Application and Marina Safety Compliance forms. These are now available online through the club portal.
- The forms are easy to use, however do not fill any of the cells with TBA. The form will be rejected and you will need to re submit
- Make sure you upload your Certificate of Currency. A copy of the invoice is not sufficient and the form will be rejected and you will need to re submit. You can easily get your certificate of currency from your insurance company.
- Once you have completed your Marina Safety Compliance form please ring one of the Compliance Officers listed on the website to have your vessel inspected before it goes into the pen.
Its not difficult and can be done from your phone.
Just remember, your key guidelines are the Pens & Moorings Policy and the Marina Regulations. Both of these are available to read or download from the Club’s web portal.

Sailor Development Program S80

The Power Yacht Section is still wrestling with the event calendar for 2021.
Linfox, thanks to Justin Taylor who now lives in Melbourne, have promised to continue their sponsorship for the coming season, which is great news.
The Pre-season Cocktail Party poster appears elsewhere in today’s edition. Maria Cook has done a marvellous job in planning an exciting evening – well done Maria. Please help Maria and her team by booking as early as possible so that catering numbers don’t blow out at the last minute.
Following the Cocktail Party, on Sunday April 11th, is the Power Yacht Training Day. The morning program is specifically aimed at newcomers to the sport of time trials. Some of the most experienced time triallers in the Club will present tips on how to prepare your boat, timing options, communication between skipper and navigator and so on. The program covers both theory and practical sessions. If you have a power boat in the club and you have not tried time trialling, do come along on Sunday and see how it works. There can be no argument that the Poweries are the friendliest bunch. Time trialling is fun and the social activity after each event is boisterous. Do yourself and your partner a favour – come and see what it’s all about!

Another easterly and 18 boats meant no time for relaxing with, seemingly, every puff shuffling the fleet order and there may have been a some gunwales rubbed when marks need to be rounded. A few different names mentioned in the consistency results although John Hassen (Final Fifteen Says She) maintains the overall lead as we near the end of the season.
Bodies continue to separate themselves from the floating bit and this week it was Jen insisting that Adam get back on board: Yes, No, Maybe at the start of race 3.
For those preparing for the State Championships over Easter, please make sure your blue card is up to date with the sails you intend to use. See Neil in the boat park to arrange a time. Also, launching at Geraldton is by the public boat ramp so a tow rope of sufficient length and strength is worth packing.
Peter and Nat (Swifft) were consistency winners of race 1, while the Commodore and Gordon (Fancy Classique) got the gong for race 2.
Last Friday 12th March the Grand Sponsors Committee held the "Grand Sponsors Regatta", an annual event to experience the joy of sailing and a bit of healthy competition between Grand Sponsors.
It was a great networking night, with a fantastic weather for sailors and spectators.
Thank you all SoPYC skippers. To the Grand Sponsors for support SoPYC Youth Development and Sailing Academy. And to Debbie Blaauw, from Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club for lending us two boats.

Message from the Archive Research Team
It was fitting that the winner of the very first race that was later to become the Geraldton Ocean Classic, was Don Leggett’s Sabre design “Terpsichore”, representing the South of Perth Yacht Club. The hard chine flying machine loved hard downwind sailing and proved her credentials by winning the race on line honours, IOR handicap and TCF handicap.
Don went on to become the Club’s Commodore from 1972 – 1973.
