We would like to remind all members, guest and visitors it is mandatory for the Club to collect contact details from everyone attending the premises be it social activities, committee meetings or visiting the admin areas.
The WA Government has developed a free app, SafeWA, which is a digital contact register system.
SafeWA is an efficient and safe way to record visitors contact details where they can check-in using the app.
Alternatively, a manual sign in sheet is available in most areas of the club.
Thank you for your help and assistance in helping us comply with the directive.

The Billy Run took place last Saturday in perfect conditions, but only a handful of club members were there to enjoy it. A total of five yachts took part, joining East Fremantle Yacht Club’s fleet of a dozen or so. Our thanks to EFYC for organising the event.
It's worth a moment to consider why this event, which once drew 50 or so boats, has degenerated into irrelevance. What started as a “boys only” affair around a bonfire on the beach at Rottnest gradually changed with the times. Clearly bonfires are no longer possible. Also clear was the fact that many sailors wanted to bring their wives and families with them. The development of the island, landing charges and mooring formalities have forever changed the Billy Run concept, but as the intrepid bunch from EFYC demonstrated, the attractions of a weekend on the island are as strong as ever and a communal run is a wonderful way of spending some time with fellow sailors and crews.
Missing from this year’s line-up was the power section – not a single power boat took part. I see some of the issues being:
- The calendar – if the Club is promoting a Billy Run, then stop river races on that date so sailors are not forced into choosing. Try to select a weekend that does not clash with other events that might take some of our sailors and crew. This year the Mandurah offshore race was on, so boat’s like Twitch are immediately unavailable.
- Review the means of publicising the Billy Run. A poster on the board and a mention at the podium are not effective.
- Involve the Cruising Section.
- The Freo bridges. Lowering the mast is far more a mental impediment than a physical problem.
- Lack of crew. Seriously? To partake in a Billy Run you only need the skipper and one other. Surely every boat owner has at least one friend who might like to spend a weekend out on the ocean.
Congratulations to R2D2, Ballina, King Canute, Finovola and Scalloway, all of whom had a great weekend. Let’s hope that next year’s Billy Run is well promoted and planned and that boat owners plan well ahead to ensure that they are ready to take part and who to invite to join them. As the five skippers of the boats mentioned will attest, it is great to enjoy a short trip on the open ocean, away from the bustle on the Swan River, and have the opportunity to mix and socialise with members from all divisions. Good luck!

Mandurah Offshore Weekend
The experiment to delay the start of the return race to midday had little effect. Light breezes were the order of the day for the return race and a premature start by Indian gave Anthony Kirke the perfect opportunity to skip away and lead all the way to record Enterprise NG’s first ever first and fastest.
A moving tribute to Rob Thomas and Paul Owens, who lost their lives when Finistere capsized off Mandurah three years ago, saw the unveiling of commemorative plaque on the Memorial Wall installed at the MOFSC.
On a lighter note, the return race just happened to be the day that Cherry Callcott (“Mother Offshore”) celebrated her 70th birthday. Congratulations Cherry!

The largest fleet of the year so far (18 boats) fronted for Club heats 7 and 8 in a light shifty south-easterly. Conditions were a bit too warm for some skippers with Jeff Vance and Rookie each taking time out of their afternoon for a refreshing dip. David and Mary-Anne Reid were so engrossed in the racing that they tried for 4 laps in a 3 lap race, surrendering 4th place in the process.
Greg and Mike (The Answer) won both heats with Nick and Nick (Ineffable) keeping them on their toes.

Greg and Mike were all teeth having won both Championship heats.

With the bell still ringing in his ears, which Past Commodore probably should have a better recollection of the club’s dress code relating to footwear ?

The Power Section had a busy meeting last Thursday.
Please remember the PIRATE RAID by Cockburn Power Boat Club on Saturday 20th April. Pirate raids are always a hoot for adults and kids alike. The raid will take place at the Centreboard Clubhouse area where the fort will be set up to mount a spirited defence of the Treasure Chest. Bookings are needed for catering purposes so don’t delay, book your place now and help us to repel the marauding hordes from down South.
Fixtures for 2021 are almost complete. The most significant change is the State Championship Series, which will consist of eight events – five conventional CPYC courses plus three invitation events. For Championship and Consistency, a boat’s best 5 results will count while the Bob Stanford Trophy will be based on the best six events. Your committee has decided not to run a Saturday time trial when there is a State event on the Sunday, thus giving everyone a reasonable program. The benefit of this arrangement is that competitors can discard events where a mechanical problem forced them out or a “bad day on the water” blew out their score.
Xantippe 2022 is up for discussion. The change to a twilight format was not universally welcomed and before the date is locked in for next year we need your feedback.
Don’t forget the pre-season cocktail party on 9th April. It will be held in the Ballroom and Maria Cook has created a really attractive format for the evening. The occasion will also see the handover of the 2019 RIP Trophy, which did not happen because of Covid restrictions.
New time triallers or members who simply want to see what this time trial business is all about have the opportunity to attend a free training session on the morning of Sunday 11th April. The session will cover both theory and practical aspects of the sport and will be run by some of the best competitors in the Club.
And how good it was to see Michael and Maria Cook waving the SoPYC flag at Mandurah over the weekend. The things you do when your boat doesn’t work does not necessarily mean that you have to spend the weekend mowing the lawn! It was a happy occasion, celebrating the results of the Halls Head ocean race (with Twitch representing the Club) with a respectful ceremony to remember FSC Vice Commodore Rob Thomas and his crewman Paul Owens, who died after the capsize of Finistere off Mandurah three years ago. A plaque in their memory was added to the Memorial Wall at the Club.

The end is nigh. First sign of the fore coming end of the summer sailing season is usually heralded by the the final race of the Twilight Series and I'm afraid folks that we've now reached that point. Weather is looking very warm and light, so let's make it a memorable one. Many thanks this season to the Twilight Start …
