The March meeting of the Power Yacht Committee will be held this Thursday 4th March, in the committee room at 7:30pm.

Proposals by the CPYC of YWA will see boats competing in eight State Championship events this season, consisting of 5 mid river heats plus three invitation events, all run strictly in accordance with CPYC rules. Competitors will count the best five of the eight for outright and the best six for the Bob Stanford Trophy.

Dovetailing the events into the Club’s program will need some compromises which when agreed, will allow the completion of the 2021 Power Yacht Red Book.

Also up for discussion is this year’s budget allocations, so Thursday promises to be a busy and interesting night for the committee.
Flying 15
With Flying Fifteens having been introduced to the South of Perth Yacht Club in season 2000/2001, it seemed fitting that a regatta be run to commemorate the occasion and that materialised on the weekend with 6 races run over 2 days. The weather forecast looked decidedly ugly, the reality was the complete opposite and a solid fleet of boats had some great racing and enjoyed some extra competition from the Freshie fleet.

Greg and Mike (The Answer) set the tone early and finished day 1 with 3 wins followed by Philippa and Dean (Firefly) 6 points back and Nick and Plonky (Ineffable) and further 2 points back. Day 2 and Greg and Mike couldn’t maintain the rage and ended up second overall behind Nick and Brad (change of crew) who won each race on the day. Currently third are Philippa and Dean from Freshie with these results being subject to protest which will be sorted out during the week.

Stories abound of what Plonky did or didn’t do during his involvement on board 2 different boats over the weekend but, in the interests of truth and crew solidarity, it was the skipper’s fault.

Thanks to all those who looked after us on and off the water and we look forward to doing much the same next weekend with a couple of Club Championship heats.

The pirates from Cockburn are coming!

Here’s a couple of easy ways to meet new Club Members, help out for a couple of hours, and afterwards share in the fun with everyone.
Members, both old and new, often ask, how they can get more involved and volunteer, here is a chance for all members and our extended Club community to gather for this unique, one night only event.

Pirate Raid Saturday 20 March
Pirate Raids are fun social tradition, shared among WA Yacht Clubs for nearly 30 years, to promote inter club camaraderie and provide an excuse for a fun DRESS UP party.

A night for all, members, guests, family and friends, young and old. Dressing as pirates is preferred, but optional.

There will a treasure hunt for the kids, Pirate Feast Table and BBQ, LIVE BAND and prizes, all near the Centreboard flagpole. Free soft drinks for kids and BYO alcohol.

SoPYC successfully raided Fremantle Sailing Club in 2018 to claim the Treasure Chest, currently kept safely behind glass in our main foyer.

Word has been received, the motley crew from Cockburn Power Boat Club, intend to storm the beach near our Centreboard flagpole to attack our fortress and steal the treasure chest.

We need your help to defend the fort and treasure then host the raiders!

How to get involved:
  • We need VOLUNTEERS to assist the Galley staff during the day to prepare platters.
  • We need VOLUNTEERS to prepare and decorate feast table.
😊 NO galley cooking, serving or washing up is required.

Contact Amanda Watson on: 0418 913 392 for more information or register you interest with Janelle in the Centreboard galley on Sundays.
  • Book tickets for your family and friends, dress up join the fun to defend the treasure. By email: reception@sopyc.com.au or call Maree on: 9364 5844.
  • Tickets: $25 Adults; $15 for children under 12.
  • Help construct the fortress, set up the lawn seating area and treasure hunt, BBQ area, help with preparing cool drinks and ice for kids.
If you need further information please, contact Rear Commodore Troy Dalglish on: 0448 288 044.

A phenomenal effort by Amanda Watson, Rick Steuart and Cally Browning has the second set of display boards, covering the period from 1955 to 1970, ready to go. Look for them in the foyer shortly.

This week’s pictures pay tribute to the excitement of building our new clubrooms after the move from Olive’s Reserve in Como, and some of the Club’s earliest forays into racing yachts offshore. Since there were no yacht clubs with ocean front facilities, South of Perth was one of the power houses in the sport, running races to Mandurah, Bunbury as well as short races out of Fremantle. All competitors had to deal with lowering the mast to get to the start line, and to do it again, tired and exhausted, in order to get home. The Club really came of age when it conducted the inaugural Geraldton Race in 1969.

The development of our Applecross clubhouse generated much publicity.
