Jack Luketina introduction
We would like to take this opportunity to officially introduce you to our new Off The Beach Sailing Administrator, Jack Luketina. Having joined SoPYC 10 years ago, Jack would not be a stranger to most at the Club.
Jack began the role at the beginning of January this year with a baptism of fire at the Goolugatup Sailing Carnival and survived! Not only does he have years of his own dinghy sailing pathway experience but also brings some well-developed coaching skills that will compliment the role nicely. Jack is one year into a two year Bachelor Degree of Computer Science and we have already seen the benefits that knowledge brings to the Club. Jack will continue to work closely with Sailing Administrator, Scott Nunn and Head Coach, Denis Jones as a key player in the On Water Group team. Jack is the go-to guy for Sunday Off The Beach racing in terms of administration and can be contacted via email: owgsupport@sopyc.com.au.

Wheelie bins western hardstand
Members could you please return the bins at the end of the rows on the western hardstand after you have used them. Leaving them in your land pen area is leading members to complain that bins have been removed when they have not been returned to the correct location.
Thank you for your consideration and understanding.

Last Saturday’s Twilight time trial was well received and most stayed for a meal and some fellowship afterwards. What a great way to start thinking about the coming season, which is barely two months away.
Behind the scenes there are changes happening, which hopefully will improve the scope of time trial activities. The most significant of these is the inclusion of three invitation races into the CPYC State Championship Series. This was trialled through necessity last season when the first months were lost due to Covid-19 and worked surprisingly well. The three events chosen are the Kylie Cup (RFBYC), The Ti-Tu (SoPYC) and the Seafarer’s Trophy (RPYC). For the championship, the best 5 scores will count. For the Bob Stanford Trophy, the best 6 scores will count. This way, competitors have a limited choice in the events they elect to support and an escape clause for a disastrously bad score.
One of the non-negotiable issues was that all clubs agreed to abide strictly to the CPYC rules without local amendments.
The season might also be impacted by the Club’s success in winning its bids to host both the National Youth Match Racing Championships and the National Womens Match Racing Championships. It is a feather in the Club’s cap that it has been selected to host such high profile events and they will need some compromises to fit into what is already a crowded calendar.

No one was more surprised than Mark Gooding on Sunday when he and Michael lead the first race from start to finish. Mark’s movements on land prior to sailing were less than spritely after, by his own admission, a big Saturday night but that obviously changed when Saltheart was added to saltwater. A seventeen boat fleet and a building westerly made for some great racing and featured some very close finishes.
Money has changed hands for boat 3935 No Stress and Andrew Colquhoun moves into the open fleet with high expectations and a lot more ropes to pull.
The 20th Anniversary Regatta kicks off next weekend with the list of entrants steadily building and includes a couple of visitors from down river and a couple of people being lured out of retirement. Racing starts at 13:25hrs on Saturday. Nominations are still being taken.

This week’s pictures pay tribute to the excitement of building our new clubrooms after the move from Olive’s Reserve in Como, and some of the Club’s earliest forays into racing yachts offshore. Since there were no yacht clubs with ocean front facilities, South of Perth was one of the power houses in the sport, running races to Mandurah, Bunbury as well as short races out of Fremantle. All competitors had to deal with lowering the mast to get to the start line, and to do it again, tired and exhausted, in order to get home. The Club really came of age when it conducted the inaugural Geraldton Race in 1969.

The development of our Applecross clubhouse generated much publicity.
