Pens & Moorings Fixtures & Fittings
In recent months Pens & Moorings committee members have noticed an increasing number of pens that have unapproved fixtures or fittings attached to the jetty or fingers. Examples of unapproved fixtures are fenders, dock wheels and hose stands. The club has specific regulations, policies and requirements regarding jetty fixings and unapproved fixtures and fittings are a direct violation of the Marina Regulations 1,5.
Regulation 1.5 states: “There are to be no additions and or alterations to any part of the jetties without written permission of the Pens and Mooring Committee.”
Members who do not have written approval for fender additions, fixtures or fittings may have the inappropriate/unapproved fixtures and fittings removed from the pen and any damage to the structure may be repaired at the cost of the member.
For the purposes of clarity, the definition of a fixture or fitting is an item that is screwed, bolted or glued to the jetty walkway of finger.
Fixtures and fittings must be installed in accordance with the Club’s requirements and practices to protect the Club’s assets and minimise corrosion and electrolysis. Whether fitted by the member or a contractor, the Club will stipulate the method and means of attaching fixtures and fittings to the jetties prior to additions being commenced. All fixtures must be uniform with existing fendering on the jetties. Dock wheels and all other fittings must have corrosion protection systems in place that minimise corrosion-causing properties including rust. Under no circumstances shall any screws or other fastenings or fixtures be attached to black pile sleeves as this will negate the pile sleeve purpose of removing oxygen from the water between the steel pile and sleeve to minimise corrosion and maintain the design life of the steel pile.
For safety reasons no items may be screwed to the aluminium service plates that run down the jetties. It is essential that members recognise that the plates on the jetties cover service ducts which carry 240v electrical cables and water. These services lie between 10mm and 50mm beneath the aluminium plates and should screws or any other fastening that penetrates the aluminium be used to fasten an item to the service duct plates, members run the risk of injuring themselves or disrupting jetty services.
All additional fixtures are installed at the members’ cost and become property of the Club. When members vacate or change pens, the fendering and dock wheels must remain attached to the pen. Should the club have to replace fixtures which have been removed the costs of replacement will be charged back to the member who occupied the pen.
For further information about attaching fixtures and fittings to club pens please contact the Pens & Moorings Committee, Facilities Superintendent or General Manager.

Patience was rewarded on Sunday for officials and competitors after a short delay in the shade of the AP, a soft westerly made its way down the river and 3 races were able to be held. There weren’t too many surprises in the over the line results with Ineffable and The Answer continuing their weekly battle. The consistency results tell the story of Richard and Duncan starting to figure out the new boat and Adam is having an easier time getting from one side of Yes, No, Maybe to the other.
Double Nickel returned to the water after having their watertight integrity restored and the Knowles (Anne and Andy) went as far as getting the cover off A2 before the heat and the lack of breeze lured them back to the air-conditioning.
The NOR for the 20th Anniversary Regatta has been circulated which details 6 races to be held on the long weekend at the end of February and will be valuable in the preparations for the State Championships in Geraldton over the Easter weekend. Nominations are required for both regattas.
Consistency racing for next weekend starting a the usual time.

Tomorrows’ race: Wednesday 17th Feb: Spinnakers will be allowed, and results should reflect yachts with and without spinnakers, so if you do not wish to fly a kite, no problem!
Billy Run: This annual event is in just another couple of weeks! It is scheduled for Saturday 6th March and this year, Rottnest is the destination. SoPYC are working with EFYC to run this event and at this stage, we understand that bookings for moorings are being organized by EFYC. If you are planning on a great weekend of sailing, and socializing at Rotto, contact Scott Nunn in Sailing Office for more details.
Retro Race 21st March: This series has been running on the Swan for many years, and each year we host one race, and invite all the old classics to enjoy the superior après-sail that SoPYC have to offer.
All wooden and plastic yachts designed pre-1965 are eligible to enter, and we are encouraging as many as possible to join in the fun of ‘Classic Racing’.
Jib and main racing starts Melville Water West at 1.30pm and finishes at SoPYC about 3.30pm. A short race to allow lots of social fellowship!
Of course, many of our fleet of H28’s will enter, as it is one of their regular Club races (having been transferred from their regular Saturday race).
Div One/A skippers and crew: how would you like to join in the fun and help out any other short-crewed prospective entrant? Give me a call (Ralph Newton on 0419 191 565, or Glen Stanley (H28) on 0418 115 285 if you are interested, or would like further details.
We have booked the Beachside Marquee for drinks and nibbles after the race, kindly provided by the H28 funds and by the Commodore/Vice Commodore.

Last Friday and Saturday saw the running of the 73rd Bunbury and Return Ocean Race, run by Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club.
As expected, Craig Carter’s Indian notched up another comfortable line honours win, but the conditions put its time more than 5 hours behind the race record she set in 2016. The agonising beat from the Windmills to the finish in a fading easterly breeze, took more than two hours, giving the chasing pack the opportunity to make up some ground.
Congratulations to Geoff Bishop and his crew on Checkmate, who did a great job to finish second over the line and first on all the handicapping systems. A great performance and some solid tactical decisions.
Spare a thought for Chris Higham, who thanks to a fish meal he ate, came down with toxic fish poisoning (it has a much more impressive name) which laid him low for the duration of the race in a hot, stuffy, sweaty cabin. He toughed it out though and went to hospital to see his wife Ali and son Jackson, who ate the same fish with the same result but were able to seek treatment. One look at Chris and the medicos hospitalised him too. All three have since recovered, thank goodness. Argo finished a credible 6th on IRC and 5th on PHS, while Barry and Betty Walsh sailed Twitch into 8th place on IRC and 6th on PHS.
Chris Hind had Sagacious on the slips for more renovations in the height of last week’s heatwave and now has a week or so to wait until he gets the boat’s mast back.
Argo (on the left) approaches the top mark with Indian, Checkmate and Obsession.
