What's on this week: 2 February 2021

Here we are day two into the lockdown and hoping that it will not extend beyond Friday. We will keep members informed as best we can. We are hopeful that we can get the bars at least trading after 6.00pm on Friday as well as food services. Staff are working from home and some staff are on site as they can not work remotely. For example, the bosuns. There are no boat lifting services during the lockdown and ideally all members are complying with the directives issue by the Government about only travelling if necessary. Boats may be visited if there is concern about the vessels’ safety and security. Night security staff are in attendance as usual.

At face value there appears to have been a regrettable incident on Sunday morning with two new fire extinguishers being left at the head of jetty 6 around 9.30am disappearing. Some members reported the matter to the GM on Sunday afternoon and Monday morning. One extinguisher was picked up by a member and placed in their Toyota 4WD, we trust for safe-keeping. The second is in the safekeeping of another member who contacted the office to inform the office it is in their care. Please would the member who left the fire extinguishers at the gangway of jetty 6 contact the office to arrange the collection of the one unit in safe-keeping and please would the keeper of the second, unreported extinguisher collection, make arrangements to return it to the administration of the club. This will avoid the unpleasant necessity to pass the vehicle details on the WA police.

Finally, a reminder about registering your attendance at the club. We are obliged to collected names and telephone numbers of all members, guests and visitors who enter the premises. This can be done via the Safe WA App or a paper register. We are finding that not all members are recording their presence particularly when just attending club meetings. For convenience, should members not have “logged in” when arriving at the club, QR signage and hard copies will be available in meeting rooms so we can comply with the government directives. The lockdown is a reminder of the importance of being diligent in recording our presence for tracing purposes should a covid affected person visit SoPYC with whichever variant of the virus they may have contracted.

Jon Sanders Homecoming
IMG_3114 Jon waves
Perth’s living legend Jon Sanders wrote another chapter for the history books when he sailed through the Fremantle finish line on Sunday to complete a remarkable eleventh solo circumnavigation of the world. Now aged 81, Jon has refused to let the years dampen his love of the ocean. When asked by a TV reporter during an interview whether he expected to undertake a twelfth solo voyage, he replied “I doubt it, but never say never…”. So the door remains ajar to the possibility of making it a nice round dozen!

An enthusiastic flotilla of boats, both power and sail, turned out to greet Jon’s Perie Banou II on the final leg of his journey to the finish line, joined by flag waving onlookers on South Mole and a guard of honour perched on the yardarms of the sail training ship Leeuwin inside Fremantle Harbour.

There were several South of Perth connections to Perie Banou’s campaign. Past Commodore Guy Skinner produced the colourful hull wrap which stood up remarkably well during the voyage and Stephen Winter (Saratoga) developed the Nebo tracking software which tracked the whole of Jon’s circumnavigation.

An abbreviated ceremony was needed due to a lightning lockdown order following a Covid-19 outbreak in the city, but nothing could destroy the euphoria of the occasion.

We join the Australian sailing community in extending our congratulations to Jon Sanders on his fantastic achievements.

Flying 15
Another solid day of sailing for a healthy fleet of 15 boats although a few didn’t front the starter for the second race as the breeze continued to edge above various comfort levels. Nick got some extra advice from son Matt this week to win both races. Consistency results should be available by the end of the week.

A spectacular wipe out by Fast Lane 4 meant they spent a bit too long with the keel in the air. A completely unbiased source, Matt (the crew), advised that it was the skipper’s fault!

Club Championship heats 7 and 8 are scheduled for next week but, with a cyclone up north and a lockdown down south, what eventually happens is anyone’s guess.

Message from the Archive Research Team

Thank you members who have contacted the group and shared your stories and photos. These images are now scanned and catalogued, thanks to Bernie and Rick.

Recent notices in the newspaper and social media are reaching further into our Yacht Club community. As families and friends gather for Christmas festivities, please remind older and past members and friends of our upcoming Reunion and Afternoon Tea on Feb 14th.

The foyer panels displays will be updated soon, featuring the period 1958-1970. The Archive Group appreciate the positive comments from members and visitors.

Identifying people in the 75 year old images is becoming more difficult, please help us by showing and asking elderly relatives, if they recognise any the faces.

Thank you for the family of our first Commodore Frank Sampson, our Committee are delighted to share these very rare original photos.
A pictorial history of Wynella an H28 05
Here is another fine example of a home built boat - Don Bourne's beautiful H28 Wynella, seen here on a jinker, ready to travel to the river for launching. Wynella has won her share of club championship and is still in the Club, performing well for her current owner, Glenn Stanley.
