What's on this week: 19 January 2021

A topic of conversation around the club are the unrelenting easterly winds we have experienced for the last month and the anticipation of the reappearance of the south-westerly pattern and the “doctor” returning. Hopefully, this will be soon. We are aware of a group of people, who walking their dogs last night, enjoyed a few moments of respite from the wind and heat by sitting in the rain which passed through Perth.

Our Green Batch Cards have arrived and will be delivered to boats in coming days. We suggest that using an open weave bag such as an onion or orange bag is a good way to store items that are accepted in Green Batch bins until the contents can be deposited in the bins. The bar code on the cards is for Green Batch purposes. Please use the card when delivering recyclable items to other collection stations too. The proceeds will support junior sailing at SoPYC and Rotary.

Australia Day is a week away and while many families are taking advantage of the “four-day” weekend, members will be able to enjoy activities at the Club. Start the day with a BYO BBQ from noon and finish the afternoon by participating in the Coffee Point SUP (stand up paddleboard) Challenge which was a very popular event last year. Details about the day and activities can be found further down the page and on the website.

Two events in February to look forward to will be the complimentary 75th Anniversary on Saturday evening 13th February and the Reunion and afternoon tea on Sunday 14th February. And, being Valentines Day, there is the traditional “couples dinner” in the Beachside marquee.

Thank you to our Grand Sponsor of the Week

Indigenous dance troupe wraps up sailing carnival

Guests at the closing ceremony of the inaugural Goolugatup Sailing Carnival were treated to a performance by members from the Wadumbah indigenous Dance troupe. The internationally renowned dance troupe impressed the crowd with a mix of traditional music, storytelling, and dance moves.

The performance signalled the end of 11 days of competition where 162 boats competed. Sailors represented 13 different fleets. Two state championships were decided, and 4 Youth championships were contested.

Competitors came from around the state and included members from Australia’s 2021 Olympic sailing team, Matt Wearn, Mara Stransky, Nia Jerwood, and Monique De Vries.

World champions, Michael Compton, Axel Fleet, Kieran Bucktin and Nick Jerwood also competed in the Laser and Flying Fifteen competitions.

Special guest competitors included a member from the Belgium 2021 Olympic sailing team Emma Plasschaert who had been in Western Australian training with her fiancé and Australian Olympic rep. Matt Wearn.

Carnival organiser and Rear Commodore Steve Grover said that the competition had been a huge success. “The feedback we have been getting from competitors has been really positive”. “Many of them are keen to have the carnival run again”, he said.

“We’ve usually got a packed sailing calendar each year so we’ll need to look at when we can run the event again”, he said.

Principle sponsor of the carnival The Ron Tough Yachting Foundation have also expressed an interest in supporting this event in the future.

Flying 15
Lots of catching up to do with a twelfth of the year almost gone, heaps of sailing having been done and nary a word reported.

We kicked off with 10 races in the first week of the Goolugatup Sailing Carnival and, not wanting to repeat ourselves, a full report can viewed at www.flying15.org.au along with some action shots courtesy of Bernie Kaaks. There is a serious lack of printable adjectives to sufficiently describe the sailing conditions of Tuesday afternoon but, safe it say, it was breezy and the John Hassen sponsored barbeque and beer at the end of that day was just the place to recall all the day’s events. Thanks to Rear Commodores Crowbar and Troy for a great regatta.

Normal programming resumed last Sunday with conditions being a mix of frustration and dehydration. Tim returned to the quiet end of Follow Us and promptly won the first 2 races and John and Matt won the third race to foil a clean sweep. Consistency winners were Carl and Kristine (Faffin), Peter and Nat (Swifft) and John and Matt (Fast Lane 4). In other news, Jen and Adam (Yes, No, Maybe) made their first appearance for the season with Adam’s ankle now deemed fit for the hobbles, Morton made a cameo on board Deffcon1 with Dave and Richard enjoyed his new boat so much that he missed the last start by quite some time.

In news of a more social nature, Tim Walker and Jen Rupp have announced their engagement which comes hot on the heels of a similar announcement by Matt Summers and Natusha Zaremba. Congratulations to all.

Same again for next week with the weather forecast to settle into a regular pattern.

Message from the Archive Research Team

Thank you members who have contacted the group and shared your stories and photos. These images are now scanned and catalogued, thanks to Bernie and Rick.

Recent notices in the newspaper and social media are reaching further into our Yacht Club community. As families and friends gather for Christmas festivities, please remind older and past members and friends of our upcoming Reunion and Afternoon Tea on Feb 14th.

The foyer panels displays will be updated soon, featuring the period 1958-1970. The Archive Group appreciate the positive comments from members and visitors.

Identifying people in the 75 year old images is becoming more difficult, please help us by showing and asking elderly relatives, if they recognise any the faces.

Thank you for the family of our first Commodore Frank Sampson, our Committee are delighted to share these very rare original photos.
A pictorial history of Wynella an H28 05
Here is another fine example of a home built boat - Don Bourne's beautiful H28 Wynella, seen here on a jinker, ready to travel to the river for launching. Wynella has won her share of club championship and is still in the Club, performing well for her current owner, Glenn Stanley.

IMG_0598 Building Serene
Most boats in the 1950’s and 60’s were home built. This is Past Commodore Merton Grey’s “Serene” under construction.

Serene had a successful offshore record at the time.

Big thanks from the Archive Research Team as several members already shared the missing Club Yearbooks. Thank you all!
