Welcome Sailors to the Goolugatup Sailing Carnival at SOPYC

GOOLUGATUP SAILING CARNIVAL
OPENING DAY

The weather & wind gods smiled and blew hard in the opening races of the Goolugatup Sailing Carnival.

A testing gusty E.S.E breeze challenged sailors (who included Olympic representatives and several World Champions!) with some coming unstuck with breakages, capsizes and for some, retirement from racing.

The standard of sailing at the front end of these fleets was nothing short of world class, demonstrated by lightening fast windward works and hair-raising downwind blasts.

Racing continues over the coming week or so with winds predicted to moderate.

Fleets represented were Cherub, Javelin, 29er and Flying Fifteen, with Race Officers Les Swinton and John Rooke, noting some spectacular starts and wind gusts in excess of 25 knots at times.

Environmental Matters

To follow-up on the Soundings article about Green Batch Cards, these are at the printers and will be received soon. Shortly, the cards will be issue to boat owners. An example of the card is below.

The club encourages all members to use the cards and support the environmental initiatives that are introduced. Several issues that crop up are recycling bins being contaminated with organic waste for which we pay a premium to the waste collection company. Please place general waste in the large steel bins rather than cardboard and general recycling bins. To help manage recycling bin content levels it is important that cartons/boxes etc. are flattened. Unflattened boxes reduce the amount of material a bin will hold and means we are paying a “fresh air” fee when the bins are emptied twice a week!

Safety Issue

Alarmingly, at some stage over the weekend a paper bag of expired flares was left alongside a general rubbish bin for collection by the waste services company. This was highly inappropriate. Fortunately, the flares were removed to a safe location. Please note that it is the responsibility of the boat owner to dispose of flares to a safe location. It is not the clubs’ responsibility to look after boat owners hazardous materials or their disposal. The link below will provide members with the information on how to safely dispose of expired flares.

Message from the Archive Research Team

Thank you members who have contacted the group and shared your stories and photos. These images are now scanned and catalogued, thanks to Bernie and Rick.

Recent notices in the newspaper and social media are reaching further into our Yacht Club community. As families and friends gather for Christmas festivities, please remind older and past members and friends of our upcoming Reunion and Afternoon Tea on Feb 14th.

The foyer panels displays will be updated soon, featuring the period 1958-1970. The Archive Group appreciate the positive comments from members and visitors.

Identifying people in the 75 year old images is becoming more difficult, please help us by showing and asking elderly relatives, if they recognise any the faces.

Thank you for the family of our first Commodore Frank Sampson, our Committee are delighted to share these very rare original photos.
