Dark Side Trophy 5 May 2018

Come on you yachties! Just for one day, take a walk on the Dark Side!

For those in the know, the Dark Side Trophy is awarded to the best performing yacht in the Opening Day Time Trial. Yachts which normally traverse the Swan River under sail, take part in the time trial under motor, most selecting a speed of either 5 or 6 knots for the day – well within the capability of most yachts. Shades, Theophis and Windjana are just some of the yachts who have tried their hand at the not so subtle art of time trialling, with varying degrees of success but all reported thoroughly enjoying the change.

It would be great if the sailing fraternity took up the once a year Dark Side challenge.
The mechanics are simple. The Club will provide each yacht with a temporary competition number for the day, a course sheet and even a mud map to illustrate the course. Each boat needs a skipper, a navigator and a clock capable of showing seconds as well as hours and minutes. Many use the traditional kitchen style clock with a big sweep second hand, while others prefer digital clocks or watches. The aim of the contest is simple. You are given a set course and a sheet which sets out the times from mark to mark. After being allocated your start time, it is a simple matter to calculate the actual time of arrival at each mark of the course – the skill lies in the skipper’s ability to judge his speed to arrive at precisely the right moment. Every second early or late will cost the boat one point. Time trials are a fun way of doing something different with your sailboat. Go on – take the challenge and be one of the 2018 contenders for the DARK SIDE TROPHY!

Flying Fifteen Club Update

You don’t need conditions to be too boisterous when you have a fleet of boats piloted by people who know a fair bit of the theory but are (mostly) lacking in practice. So it was for the annual crews' race with no more than 10 knots from the west and a near-vacant river. Kristine had Faffin in the lead for most of the race but was eventually caught on the last lap by Tony (She who must be obeyed) and the eventual winner, Russell in Second Breakfast. Consistency winner was Adam in Yes, No, Maybe.
Richard (Electric Diamonds) was under the whip all day from Lillo to be first over the line but didn’t qualify as a crew doing the skippering.
The end is nigh with closing day, the last 2 Club Championship heats and the Commodore’s trophy next Sunday at around 1325hrs.

50th Geraldton Ocean Classic - 20 October 2018

Exciting news from over East! The Fremantle to Geraldton Yacht Race in its current format (cat 2 and held in the six months prior to the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race) is now recognised as an official qualifying race for this year's Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race and will be listed in their NOR this year.
