Plastic Statistics
It’s estimated that 630 million kilos of trash enters the ocean each year alone. Plastic pollution alone is estimated to affect at least 267 species worldwide, with 86 percent of sea turtle, 44 percent of seabird, and 43 percent of marine mammal species impacted. Plastic debris most commonly impacts marine life through ingestion of plastic, or entanglement within the plastic itself. Not only are these numbers astounding in the threat they pose to marine life with species endangerment and extinction levels on the rise, but there is also a noteworthy impact to humans. Over one third of waters where shellfish are grown for human consumption are negatively impacted by coastal pollution.
• A straw is used for an average of 20 minutes but hangs around for a further 600 years.
• 73 percent of beach litter is plastic: filters from cigarette butts, bottles, bottle caps, food wrappers, grocery bags, and polystyrene containers.
• Nearly a million plastic beverage bottles are sold every minute.
• Some 700 species of marine animals have been reported so far to have eaten or become entangled in plastic.

For the first time in many years, the Tally Hobbs Regatta was sailed from Fremantle Sailing Club as part of the lead up to next year’s Worlds. Conditions on Saturday were lighter than expected and made for some great sailing while Sunday went to the script with a thumping southerly to finish the day. Nick and Brad (Ineffable) took the chocolates over the 6 races and the 21 boat fleet reflected the building appetite for training prior to the main event next February. Full results can be found at www.rfbyc.asn.au . Thanks to the RFBYC fleet captain, Hamish, for organising another great weekend of sailing and socialising.
On the subject of socialising, the annual curry night is on this Saturday at the Centreboard Clubhouse with details having been circulated by Fleet Captain Greg. Part of the original plan for this night was that it gave an opportunity for the men to have their culinary skills on display (and judgement!). On the assumption that we all survive, there should be plenty of fuel in the tank for a couple of Club Championship races on Sunday.

Head Coach Report 11 Feb 2020
Last weekend was another practice regatta for the Flying 15's at Freo, which I was supporting. Good progress from the previous week with most boats trimming a lot better, with their boats tuned differently. Glad you listened :) Both days had biased courses and provided an opportunity to test the classic theory of "Sailing the longest tack first" With the …

It's time to think about your plans for the coming Labour Day Long Weekend in February 2020. A message from Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions
Rottnest Island Fuel Jetty
It’s been another busy summer on Rottnest, with record numbers of people enjoying our wonderful Island.
With increasing visitor numbers, the Rottnest Island Authority is committed to ensuring all facilities are supporting this growth.
As part of State Government funding, the $3 million redevelopment of Rottnest Island’s Fuel Jetty is underway, with tenders for its demolition and reconstruction being sought.
The new jetty will offer many benefits to the Island, including a new deck, additional power and water facilities, new finger jetties, improved refuelling/berthing for smaller vessels and an extended end platform. More details can be found at www.ria.wa.gov.au/news.
Demolition and construction is due to begin in April 2020.
I wanted to write and inform your club and your members that during the demolition and reconstruction period, there will be disruptions and inconvenience for people who use the Fuel Jetty. In most cases, boat owners will need to make alternative arrangements.
If you have any queries or are seeking more information about the Fuel Jetty project, please contact our Communication and Media Manager Kent Acott on 0419 942 278 or at kent.acott@dbca.wa.gov.au.
