Information current as of 23rd January 2020
Dear members and friends,
The Department of Health (DoH) has upheld its warning regarding the toxic Alexandrium algal bloom in the Swan and Canning rivers. DoH is advising people not to eat fish, crabs or shellfish collected from within the Swan River, extending from Pelican Point to Como Jetty and upstream to Tonkin Highway Bridge, or within the Canning River, extending from the South of Perth Yacht Club to Como Jetty and upstream to Kent Street Weir. A map of the impacted area is attached. Alexandrium toxins can cause paralytic shellfish poisoning and cooking will not destroy these toxins.

Please see the latest DoH media statement at https://ww2.health.wa.gov.au/Media-releases/2020/Algal-bloom-warning-extends-to-Canning-River.

The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions continues to conduct weekly water quality monitoring at an increased number of sites to track the extent of the bloom. We are also testing mussels and blue swimmer crabs for the Alexandrium toxin. DoH and local riverfront councils have arranged for health warning signs advising against crabbing, shellfish collection and fishing to be erected at key riverfront locations including jetties, boat ramps and key accessible foreshore areas within the affected region. It should be noted that swimming and other aquatic recreational activities on the Swan and Canning rivers are not impacted by the algal bloom, but as a general rule swimming should be avoided in areas of discoloured water.

Further information is provided in detail on Alexandrium and FAQ’s here and through this link
or contact the Department of Health on 9222 2000 or visit HealthyWA.

A message from Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions

Rottnest Island Fuel Jetty

It’s been another busy summer on Rottnest, with record numbers of people enjoying our wonderful Island.

With increasing visitor numbers, the Rottnest Island Authority is committed to ensuring all facilities are supporting this growth.

As part of State Government funding, the $3 million redevelopment of Rottnest Island’s Fuel Jetty is underway, with tenders for its demolition and reconstruction being sought.

The new jetty will offer many benefits to the Island, including a new deck, additional power and water facilities, new finger jetties, improved refuelling/berthing for smaller vessels and an extended end platform. More details can be found at www.ria.wa.gov.au/news.

Demolition and construction is due to begin in April 2020.

I wanted to write and inform your club and your members that during the demolition and reconstruction period, there will be disruptions and inconvenience for people who use the Fuel Jetty. In most cases, boat owners will need to make alternative arrangements.

If you have any queries or are seeking more information about the Fuel Jetty project, please contact our Communication and Media Manager Kent Acott on 0419 942 278 or at kent.acott@dbca.wa.gov.au.
