SoPYC Sailor Becomes Multiple World Champion

One of South of Perth’s talented competitors has added to his trophy cabinet with a World Championship in a second class of boat. Conor Nicholas, who won a Youth World title in the Laser class in 2015 has just partnered with dual Olympic medallist and multiple world title winner, Darren Bundock to clinch the Formula 18 (F18) World crown in Costa Brava, Spain.

It was anything but an easy ride, starting the regatta with a disqualification (UFD) in the first race and a tight battle with the reigning champions throughout. The pair gave everyone watching at home plenty of nervous moments as they relinquished a three-point lead in the first race of the final day and then slipped further to sit six points off the pace with one race to go. In a shifty and dying breeze they pulled a “rabbit out of a hat” to win handsomely and leave the Greek regatta leaders in 17th position in the final race, securing the title. The bronze medal was taken by Argentina.

Conor has been a proud representative of SoPYC since his early days in the Pelican and Optimists. He has now won medals at world championship level in four classes – Laser Radial (gold), Laser 4.7 (bronze), Viper 640 (silver) and now F18 (gold). He has also skippered the crew that won the Foundation Youth Cup on behalf of the Club (2018) and has been a regular helm in the Interclub Championships for SoPYC over recent years.

Darren Bundock has been Conor’s coach in the Australian Sailing Squad over the past two years and is considered a legend of the multihull classes. Having worked together closely over a number of campaigns, he says Conor was a natural choice when he decided to return to the event that has already won three times previously, most recently in 2011. “I knew he had what it takes. It’s great to see new young talent with a bright future”, he said after their win.

The team was one of 17 Australian boats in the regatta, including seven from WA.

Congratulations to “Bundy & Con” on a magnificent result!!
