Flying Fifteen Club Report 28 May 2019

The wind was cool, the water cold but the soup was hot (potato and leek) making perfect autumn conditions for the first of our Schweppes Applecross Cup winter regattas. Some of the 10-boat fleet were keen to try out some new gear and train for the World Championships later this year and some felt like they had done enough gardening …

Keelboat Prize Night 2019

At nearly 200 guests, it was a very well attended prize night this year with excellent representation from across all our Club fleets. The food was delectable, as was the swift service.
An undoubtedly most-worthy person was selected as this year’s Keelboat Sailor of the Year – Bruce Uren, as was the Offshore Keelboat Champion, Chris Higham. Congratulations!
Thanks to the Club’s appointed official photographer for the evening, Bernie Kaaks, all the fine memories have been captured in these fabulous photos.

Applecross Cup 2019 Day 2

Day 2 May 26th 2019 Once again we were blessed with consistent breeze's, not too strong and just enough to keep both the Flying Fifteen’s and the Pelicans happy. This year we welcome the windsurfers into the pack and Denis Jones brought a merry throng over from Mounts Bay. For a complete gallery of the day see Rick's webpage here

CPYC State Championship Heat 1 May 25th 2019

RC Narrowly Beats PC on Countback to take out the Flag!

A fleet of 51 boats competed in the first of the five-event, State Heat Series.
On a new course, the start line was in the Claremont Bay in an 8-knot zone and included the other 8-knot zone just off the old Swan Brewery around Quarry Spit. This made a total of 7 legs of the course a challenge for our 12-knot time triallers.

The afternoon was sunny with a light breeze making the boating conditions perfect for skippers and crew. Regular Stater Garry Morrison had checkpoints on 13 marks which lead to some higher than usual scores.
Rear Commodore (Michael) Cookie and Maria took out the honours on a count back from Past Commodore Guy Skinner and fill in navigator Victoria Blanckensee and Cosmos from RPYC all with 11 points. Cookie 1st, Guy & Cosmos equal 2nd. Other boats that performed well were Dalusional 4th and Amazon 5th on countback both with 12points, Nearly 19 6th place with 14 points and Reel Escape 8th on 15 points.

Worth noting the start boat with Mark Donatti and Brian Cain from RFBYC in charge (Mark recently named Power Boat Person of the Year) kept a very close eye, with only 10 boats in the entire fleet recording a zero start.
Club Flags will be presented in 2 weeks after the Bob Blanckensee Memorial Time Trial on Sat 8th June. Congratulations to M&Ms on their State Heat Least Points win.
With the long weekend coming up, a reminder to all Power Yacht fleet, you’re invited to Mindarie Marina for the “Farewell to Fonster” jetty party with a live band this Sunday afternoon.

Cruising Logo
Last Thursday evening the 23 May 2019 the Captain of the Cruising Section, Jan Becker took great delight in officially handing over to our Commodore Phil Warwick, the hard-fought-for Pirate Treasure Chest from Fremantle Sailing Club.

In 1973 this Treasure Chest Trophy was created to commemorate pirate raids conducted between kindred clubs, and inaugurated by the Cruising Yacht Club. It was then competed for by East Fremantle Yacht Club and stolen by Cruising Yacht Club and has continued for more than 40 raids.
On the 23rd March this year the SoPYC Cruising Section led an armada of boats and many enthusiastic pirates who fought a great battle against FSC and successfully stole the chest!

The chest is now on display in the glass cabinet in the Club foyer and will remain there until another club advises us of a challenge.
