Graeme Hood Memorial Trophy

Handicap trophy winner and birthday boy, Justin Taylor on Kryponite, also tied for Least Points with Steve and Di Clarke on Board Room with 6 points “off the stick”.
Justin was gracious, fondly remembering Graeme in his acceptance before being urged to “ring the bell”.
A perfect time trialling day, blue, sunny skies, gentle breeze and another new course for the fleet to navigate. The test was the hairpin turn down at Bricklanding to get back to Lucky Bay on time, a near impossible task for the larger 12 knot boats, resulting in numerous, loud protests urging starter John Meldrum to scrap Brickies from results. Some boats reported speeds in excess of 25 knots and still late! Great result for Steve and Justin to score 6 on the 12 checked marks.
Handicap fleet winners in the Starboard fleet were a surprised team Amazon Steve Wall and Amanda Watson with a low enough handicap to still take out a first flag with 20 points . Happy campers just back from Broome, Vern and Judy Bailey on Holidaze were 2nd on countback also with 20 points with Steve and Di Clarke, Board Room collecting the 3rd place flag 21 points
Second place in the Port fleet behind Justin and Helen Taylor Kryponite (12 points) were David Markham and Deon Moore on Living the Dream with 16 points and third, Jason Claricoates and Caroline James on Northstar with 17 points on handicap.
Next week is the Colin Wilson Trophy which carries $100 prize money, kindly donated each year by Colin’s family for the trophy winner.

Department of Transport Mooring Issue

Dot Moorings located adjacent to Mends Street Jetty – caution may be required in this area.

We have received a report from a member about severe propeller damage to his vessel having hit an underwater obstruction moving away from a DoT mooring at Mends Street. The damage has been reported to DCBA, Rivers Division, staff who are investigating the mooring and surrounds for underwater obstructions. The member was moored on the western-most mooring and was motoring at slow speed in an easterly direction to the channel leading to Elizabeth Quay. Approximately 5m-8m from the mooring, the starboard propeller struck an underwater obstruction, resulting in serious damage to the blades. Should members be using the mooring, please do so with caution. We will be informed of the outcome of the investigation once completed.

Yacht Safe – Equipment Audit Forms
Keelboat Skippers that regularly participate in racing would have received an email from Yacht Safe reminding of the need to complete and submit the relevant Equipment Audit form prior to the new season.
Now there are two ways this can be done:
Skippers that prefer to try Yacht Safe, need to first activate their account. The first email Yacht Safe sent to Skippers at least a month ago included their username and password together with the activation link. Please sift through your emails to find it.
Forms submitted via Yacht Safe are saved there forever allowing easy referral if necessary.

Keelboats racing on the river require the Cat 7 form. Keelboats participating in the Billy Run to TCYC will require Cat 6. Off The Beach boats are required to complete the Special Regs Part 2 form.

To be eligible to race, forms need to be submitted prior to your first race of the 2019-2020 season.

Safety & Sea Survival Course
The SSS course at FSC starting Tuesday 17 September is already fully booked!
Anyone intending to compete in the Geraldton Ocean Classic and still needs to either complete the full course or do a refresher, there may still be an opportunity.

Head Coach Report 27 August 2019

The Laser 4.7 Youth World Championship came to an end over the weekend in Kingston, Canada. The regatta was a true test for the talented young sailors with a little bit of everything conditions wise. After a solid qualifying series, SoPYC’s Toby Coote qualified for gold fleet and went on to finish the event as the top placed Australian in 50th overall and 21st U16 in the 117 boat boys fleet. WA was also represented by Mia Lovelady who sailed well to finish 27th in the 63 boat girls fleet. Both WA sailors also notched up a 2nd place in the final race of the qualifying series! SoPYC’s Laser coach, Ben Walkemeyer, coached all nine Australian sailors at the event and was proud of the progression of the entire team at their first World Championship. Congratulations to our WA sailors and to the rest of the Australian team, in particular, Evie Saunders from Sydney who claimed silver in the U16 girls division!

Viper Worlds 2019 – Alamitos Bay Yacht Club California
Congratulations to a 3rd place from South Of Perth Yacht Club former Viper 640 World Champions Nick Jerwood, Brian DeVries, and Matt Jerwood.
Marcus Eagan, Andrew Eagan, and Jackson Benvenutti (Mandeville, LA) won both the Goslings 2019 Viper 640 World Championship and the 2019 Viper 640 North Americans. The four-day Championship consisted of 13 races in atypical Long Beach conditions – light, 8-10 knots except for the final race on Day 2 and the last two on the final day when winds were mid to high teens. It was a regatta where sailors were faced with a wide range of conditions and those atop the podium had to be capable of dealing with them all.

Learn to Sail Programs enrolments are now open
These course are called “Tackers 1 and 2” and are fully compliant with the Australian Sailing Tackers syllabus. However, we will be adding a lot more to help sailors get more out of the program as part of our overall Structured Learning Methodology.

A lot of parents ask me what is the ideal age to start. I would say most sailors start at 8 years old. This usually means they are confident swimmers which helps their sailing confidence. Some start earlier and that is fine, but I would suggest making those early years less frequent and more fun. So if it is cold or there are other things on, it’s fine to miss a session.

Starting a little later is also fine but it’s best to go through the program with similar aged sailors, as it is simply more fun.

Starting later around 12 is still possible but requires more effort to catch up. The sailors may be at the same level as an 8-year-old which may affect their confidence, so it needs to be managed.

Starting after 12 requires a different program as sailors will generally be going through major growth spurts and fitting into bigger classes without the fundamental skills is a challenge. Still definitely possible, but needs management. The OutThere program is a fun way to start and we have a pathway in mind if sailors want to progress and catch up.

OutThere Sailing
I’ve received a number of queries regarding an adult’s version of the OutThere sailing course possibly on for parents when their children are training.

Fifteeners Take Off.
Four South of Perth teams set off this week for their world championship in Dun Laoghaire, on the outskirts of Dublin in Ireland. In a fleet with is full of former world champions, our crews can expect stiff opposition from strong fleets from both Ireland and England.
Our locals are Peter Rooke and Paul Dunbar, John Hassen and Kevin Griffiths, Kim Peaker and Neil White and John Wilson and Matt Summers. Greg Tonnison was on the verge of joining them but unfortunately work commitments got in the way. Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht also has two crews entered – former world champion Dean McAullay, who has teamed up with Mike Hart, and Greg Leaversuch and Peter Barblett.
John Hassen’s new boat will be waiting for him on arrival, so he is hoping for a good result.
We wish our members every success.

Let's go offshore!

About my sailing journey and how it led to offshore racing …
Leanne Fallows
Early in 2015 my son started sailing in the National 125s. I spent quite a few lazy summer afternoons laying under the ‘125 tree’ on the Centreboard Clubhouse lawn chatting to people waiting for him to finish sailing. It was during this time I was roped into the “Women in Wetsuits” dinghy course run by the OWG teaching interested mums the basics of sailing. I had a great time, and this very quickly led to me sailing regularly in the 125s and also in the keelboat section at SoPYC. I joined the Women’s Squad run by SoPYC a year or so later. This taught me a lot about sailing in keelboats, including that on big boats when they say “topper down” you release it in a controlled fashion – you don’t just drop it like you would in a dinghy – oops!

Last year armed with this knowledge and not too much more, I found myself being one of ten crew sailing offshore on Twitch, a Beneteau First 44.7 with Betty & Barry Walsh. I first met Betty down at the club after sailing on a Wednesday afternoon. She spoke about racing offshore and how much fun it was. I thought it was only for experienced people and didn’t think it was something I could do given my limited experience. Betty was very encouraging and before I knew it, I was sailing in my first ocean race.

I competed in a few races out of Fremantle as part of the Valmadre Winter series which was my introduction to ocean racing. I was hooked pretty early on as chocolate and lollies were part of the crew’s staple diet on the boat. And apparently for a scientific reason too! Also at the beginning of every race, each yacht sails really close to the start boat so a handful of snakes can be thrown on board. It was like sailing dinghies again with Les handing out lolly pops off the back of the start boat at SoPYC, just a tad bigger.

Having survived the Winter series, a few months later I joined Twitch in the 50th Fremantle to Geraldton Ocean Classic Yacht Race. This was also my first overnight offshore race which was both exciting and scary. The preparation for this was huge which included learning how to deploy a life raft and let off flares. There were lots of information nights to attend, safety gear and warm clothing to arrange. With all the preparation that went into the race I felt really safe. Having always suffered from sea sickness, even just to Rottnest, I wasn’t sure how this would work out. Also knowing that I would be doing sail changes in the middle of the night and would be part of a four hourly rotating watch was all a bit daunting. It ended up being a challenging but amazing experience from which I learnt a lot. The bonds you build with people sailing in close proximity to each other for extended periods of time was also very rewarding.

With my first offshore season under my belt I have since sailed in the Koh Samui Regatta & Phuket Race Week in Thailand. These were both amazing regattas where I met a lot of people from all around the world. People with a variety of different sailing abilities ranging from novice to professional. Confirmation that you don’t need to have a lot of experience to start racing offshore, just a desire to join in and give it a go.

Phil Warwick

Congratulations to all with a special welcome to Phil Warwick.

I take this opportunity to thank the retiring directors Garry Morrison, Gordon Blaauw and Peter Kennington for their support and valuable contribution over the many years of their involvement, well done.

During the forthcoming year, my agenda will be focussed on refreshing our WA-centric Safety and Race Officials Committees, creating and delivery of a Value Proposition for our Power Boat community, increased funding and education and growth of our certified volunteer resource. Another item on our Agenda are where appropriate will be to assist our members in enhancing good Governance and Performance Management practices, as an example we are exploring the potential of conducting Like with Like group sessions between Clubs and Associations at peer to peer level.

Finally and in the light of the many changes we have seen over the last 4 years, your new board will be reviewing the YWA strategic plan at its next meeting on 16th September, so if you feel you have some input in this regard please contact any of your board before that date.

Looking forward to a great year.

CLUB'S BLACK SWANS

Please don’t try to feed them or their cygnets as they are vegetarians and have plenty of food available in the neighbouring shallow waters around the club.

It’s a good idea to keep an eye on your young children and ensure that they are warned not to go near either the swans or their young. Please keep away from the swans as it could cause them to become aggressive. Observe them from a distance and enjoy the sight of the truly unique specimens of the black swan of Western Australia.

Look forward to the next few months as the cygnets hatch and the club becomes home to the newest pair of parents on the river.
