This Week at a Glance
Strangely, there were a few tired bodies at the end of Sunday’s sailing and plenty of stories to tell if the volume in the bar afterwards is anything to go by. Spot The Difference (Greg and Alex) were fastest in each race with winning margins of about a minute.

Crane three on the Western Hardstand - Out of Service
Members are advised that both jib arms on crane three on the Western Hardstand are out of order for the foreseeable future. Vector, the lifting company, do not know the availability of the replacement parts. It is possible that it will be January before new parts can be supplied.

Jetty and Pen Fastenings
During a recent inspection of the Club jetties it was noted that there are unapproved fastenings and fittings attached to jetties and fingers.
Members are reminded that all fittings and fixtures that are not “normal” jetty fastenings must be approved formally by SoPYC. Many fenders types and hose stands have been attached to the jetties without the formal consent having been applied for or approved.
Many of these unapproved fixtures have not be attached according to Club requirements and the present fastenings such as dissimilar metals may introduce conditions that promote corrosion on the jetties and fingers. This is especially so where the black HDPE sleeves around jetty piles have had penetrations through the HDPE by such things as screws to hold hooks for mooring lines and power cords. The idea of the sleeve is to stop oxygenated water sitting in the gap between the sleeve and pile creating rust on the steel pile wall and reducing the life of a pile (nominally 30 years). Without oxygen, the water become inert and rust action is virtually eliminated. Holes in the sleeve reintroduce oxygen and restarts the rust.
Unapproved fixtures may be removed from jetties and pens without notice to members and any repairs required to make good the damage to the jetties created by unapproved fixtures and fittings will be charged back to members accounts.
A further issue is boat fittings being tied off/secured to safety equipment such as fire hose pipes and up-stands. As a matter of good practice and safety, no item shall be tied off or secured to safety equipment such as fire hose reels, extinguisher boxes or power/water bollards.

SoPYC Wheel Clamp
At the recent Management Committee meeting the subject of car parking was discussed and the Committee is concerned at the number of cars that are being parked improperly, ignoring parking information, inadequately identified (which includes boat trailers), blocking hardstand trailer bays preventing members using their boats, or not being able to return boats to the land pens.
The Security Committee has been asked to resurrect “Jed” (clamp-it) - the colloquial name for the club wheel clamp. So without attaching the clamp injudiciously and without warning, the Security Committee is asking that member’s be conscious of their parking habits around the club. Should the clamp be applied to a vehicle, it can only be released during office hours Monday to Friday and the fee attached to the removal of the clamp is $150.00.

There have been numerous contacts between boats competing on the river lately, which most if not all, could have been avoided if only skippers and crew kept a sharp eye out for converging boats. By all means continue to race for those sheep stations, but do it in a considerate and safe way please.
It was reported by Nedlands Yacht Club last Sunday 9th December that two keelboats identified as belonging to SoPYC sailed straight through their start line while it was in use for another event. When the orange on-station flag is displayed, unless it is your start, keep well clear of the start line. This applies to races conducted at SoPYC or any other sailing club.

FRANK SAMPSON MEMORIAL PURSUIT RACE
The second of our all-in Keelboat pursuit races is on again this Saturday. Keelboats already entered in the Saturday Summer Series need not do anything more to enter. Keelboats that are not in the Saturday Summer Series and want to compete this Saturday, there is still time to enter. Keelboats from surrounding clubs are also welcome to join in. Big Bertha (LED timer) will again be used. For further details – please click here.
CHECKING YOUR ENTERED IN A RACE
From time to time, sailors having finished a long, gruelling race find themselves frustrated at not getting a result. This is usually due to the boat not being entered in the series. All competing boats must enter online via the Online Entries webpage. Once entered, the skipper should receive an auto-generated email confirming entry. This can be further checked in three places:-
- Online entries page
- Series results online (see Entrants List)
- Entrants list posted on the official noticeboard before each race.
Remember, all entries must be submitted at least 24 hours before the race. If you ever need any assistance, please contact Scott Nunn, Sailing Administrator in the On Water Office.
Kindly be reminded that whenever a boat changes skipper either for a single race or more, this must be communicated to the On Water Group before the race. If this is not done, that boat may risk being penalised.
Please use the official Change Form or pop into the On Water Group.
A new version of the Sailing Red Book has just arrived and there are plenty of them. Designed to fit most pockets, handbags, man bags, bumbags, they’re a handy way to stay informed . Freely available from the foyer outside the OWG office and around the Club. Please give us your feedback.
